desertcart.com: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Original Illustrations: 9781948132824: Twain, Mark, Williams, Truman: Books Review: The joy of sharing with a grandson, such gifted writing - I looked for a copy of Tom Sawyer that had the original illustrations. This book is wonderful. It has the illustrations and my grandson appreciates that. My grandson and I are reading this together. He is 10 years old and this book helps him understand the history of our state. We talk about how life was so very different then and what it was like to be a child during this period period. We talk about the prejudice and why it existed. He relates his ten-going on -11-year-old life and I can see his eyes light up just when they should at Twainโs wonderful sense of humor. Heโs also beginning to understand the relationship between Tom wanting to impress Becky and he laughs at all the right places. Wonderful book incredible writing, and a true understanding of human nature. Review: Very entertaining. - This was a very entertaining read. It's full of witty dialog and relatable boyhood antics. It was a fun adventure. The book itself arrived in good condition and has held together well for three readings.

Tom Sawyer meets a modern 10 yr old boy
I love this classic version of one of the best books ever. I read it 10 times as a kid. Now my 10 year old grandson is a huge fan of Mark Twain and Tom Sawyer. He started off hesitantly about an old book grandma was pushing and found out he could hardly put it down.

I highly recommend the Seawolf Press edition
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the first book I've read by Mark Twain. I read The Story of a Bad Boy by Thomas Bailey Aldrich last fall to my younger boys. It's said to be the book that inspired Mark Twain to write Tom Sawyer. We all loved it and highly recommend reading it! We enjoyed it so much that I knew I wanted to read Tom Sawyer to my kids, too. I'm happy to say we all loved it, too. Tom gets himself into scrape after scrape and you just can't help, but love him as Aunt Polly would say. We're looking forward to continuing on with Huckleberry Finn next. I read the Seawolf Press edition, one of the 100th Anniversary Collection, which has the original 160 illustrations. The illustrations are so neat and the edition is wonderfully put together using fonts that were common 100 years ago when the author passed away. I can't recommend these editions highly enough. I love facsimile editions and Seawolf Press puts out some of the best.

Disjointed collection of childrenโs stories.
The publication quality was great and probably the closest youโll get to the first edition. The story, I found to be more of a collection of moments in a childโs life that lacked cohesion. The final portion of the book helps to understand his later work, Huck Finn, but this is the only reason to read it, IMHO.

Classic
It's a classic. Some of the language isn't politically correct, but that's expected for the era it is written. The language is also a little formal & may me difficult for younger readers.

Beautiful copy of a timeless classic
Bought this as a family Christmas gift since our older children are currently learning about 19th Century US History in school. My husband is reading aloud to our 4, 6 & 9 year old boys. None of the three of them have ever read it before. STORY: Although the vocabulary and speech patterns are unfamiliar to the kids, they are willing to ask for explanations and the book has us all laughing at every chapter. Even the four-year-old will ask about things he doesn't understand, or to "pause" if he needs to get something from another room. COPY: I was skeptical that this would be a nice copy given the price I paid, but it is tasteful, sturdy for a paperback, and the original illustrations are plentiful and lend a great deal of character. The illustrations were important to me since they were included in the original publication. The children enjoy those they see now (there are too many to show them all), but they'll be even more useful as motivators and to help the children get a feel for that period, when they're old enough to read it on their own.

The book in itself is excellent and a classic of course. The actual print is decent and the illustrations nice. The language can be a bit daunting for a kid, so I read it to him and explain the meaning of words and expressions when he needs that. He certainly finds the story entertaining and the characters interesting.
