Does this measure speed in knots? I am trying to find something to use on a small sailboat that doesn't require mounting ... any ideas?

No. it does not show tides, it does show moon and sun rise/set times as well as best hunt and fish times.

I'm new tho GPS...I have a brother in the Philippines and he needs to draw his trails (basically make his own map) over the mountains. Will this work?

I would have to say no, your brother would probably need something with a map similar to the Garmin GPSMAP 64 Worldwide with High-Sensitivity GPS and GLONASS Receiver, just an example you can get anyone you choose. It may cost a little more but to make your own map you would need one of the slightly more advanced models.

Does this 72H operate on external power ?

There is a 12v. cable available if you have an outlet near your steering station. Not really necessary unless you are on a protracted trip - battery usage is not bad.
