Understanding Pre-Algebra Workbook - Middle School Mathematics (Grades 6-8)

I got this book for my 9th grade homeschooled son as part of his preparation to go to public high school next year. He has been behind in math and I want to make sure as he catches up, that he actually understands the concepts he is learning so he'll be able to build on them. We have only just started to use the book. It looks like it will do what it claims in the Introduction, "what makes this book different from other pre-algebra books is that it organizes concepts in a logical fashion...avoids...trying to teach new concepts before students receive the prerequisite skills and practice necessary for success." I like the fairly large type and that there is plenty of space on each page for good readability without getting overwhelmed by too much information. I would recommend this book so far and will try to update after we have used it for a few months.

The book itself it nice, the pages are not too thin, and the amount of whitespace is easy on the eyes. The lessons on the other hand, leave something to be desired. Some of the lessons go into very little detail regarding how the student should approach the problems. I think it would make a better review book than stand alone text book.

We have 2 children working through this book on pre-algebra. The exercises start out simple which is helpful, and get harder as the child masters the easier problems. My kids enjoy the problems and don't get frustrated with them like some of the other books we've used for math.

Unless you really have an understanding of math terms, this book won’t help you learn or understand anything! I never took algebra so I figured that’s where Pre algebra would be helpful….but this book doesn’t teach it just has you do work that you’ve never seen in your life!

This is great for my 5th grader. It is good way to prepare to middle school.

Very practical and easy to follow

Previously, I was a college math tutor. I bought this for my 6th grader, because the math books these days in school are not good enough. I was looking for a more complete and thorough book like I had growing up. The author of this book was a math teacher for 30 years and you can tell. This book explains all steps needed from beginning to end, and in a logical order. She does not skip any steps, and builds upon what was learned in the previous chapter. The colorful graphs, charts, and drawings hold a child's attention well. Most books available aren't very thorough. I searched for a long time, and this was the best book of them all. Do your future math genius a favor and just buy it.
