Classic Double Edge Premium Men’s Metal Safety Razor with x5 Refill Blades

All my life I have never used a razor and instead electric shavers however, over the last year or so, i've had issues with skin irritation. At great expense, I tried Harry's but a) I paid for the upgraded razor and the quality is poor and b) as much as the marketing of any cartridge razor (cough Gillette) claims, "closest shave", "no irritation - smooth with one stroke due to multiple blades", the truth is that the more blades, the more irritation. So, I took the big step to razor shaving and landed on the Wilkinson Sword safety razor, as the top rated on Amazon. Seems like it was a good choice! The razor is superbly made and nice and weighty - it's very clearly a high quality product but for a reasonable price. The blades are fine however, I do think there are sharper out there on the market. Very importantly, shaver waste, to me is disgusting and has to stop. I cannot believe that in 2022 supermarkets still sell "single use disposable" shavers which aren't recyclable (I also can't believe how popular they are). The cartridges are just as bad - all that plastic with metal blades within - most council facilities wouldn't be able to recycle those and it seems a waste in the first place to keep replacing a perfectly serviceable head. Safety razors and single blade "cut throat" are the most 'ethical' of the lot. The only waste is easily recycled wafer thin stainless steel blades and a bit of paper (so long as you buy the right blades - I noticed the Wiklkinson Sword ones come in plastic boxes of 5 which seems mad!). For anyone looking to make the switch and that hasn't used a razor before, I found this very easy, achieved a much smoother shave than I get from my electric shaver and, only got 1 tiny little cut (I mean tiny) on my first go. I am a convert.

There are lots of this type of razors on Amazon, but when it comes to an extremely sharp blade against my face I would rather go for a brand, So I went for Wilkinson. Plus, I vaguely remember my granddad owning a similar razor so I was curious about how it would perform. So Pros & Cons Pro – Longer facial hair – This little razor will quite happily shave through a weeks worth of growth with ease. This is where I find disposables and multiblades fail miserably, anything more than 2 days growth and a disposable is gunked up and useless. Pro – Reuse & cleaning – Ok I like to get my moneys worth. So at the end of a shave I will carefully take the blade out and clean out the hair/shaving foam. Because of this I get lots of shaves out of a single blade. Since buying this I am on my 3rd blade. Con – Closeness of shave – This is old tech and there is a reason why these space age, designer, super multiblade razors exist. This razor will give a good shave but just not “babys bum” smooth, unless you re-shave 3 times. Personally, I don’t mind and it gives a good enough shave for work. Pro - Design – I like the retro styling of this razor. But one thing I particularly like is the blade on either side. As I have got into the routine of first pass shave one side and then second pass shave turn the razor around. Pro/Con – Weight - Being an all metal design means this razor has some weight to it. This isn’t a problem for me but some buyers may want to consider. Pro/Con – Learning curve – After years of using ergonomically designed razors, this razor comes with a learning curve. I taught myself how to shave with a cut throat years ago and I swear I cut myself less with the cut throat then I have with this! (but less “bleedy”). Once you have the “technique” then it is great little razor. However, due to this I wouldn’t want to give this type of razor to my son as his first attempt at shaving. But when he hits 18 with some years of shaving then maybe it fits the build as a “mans razor”. Pro – Eco Credentials – So this razor wins hands down against Disposable and the space age designer razors. The only waste this razor produces is the blade. Compare this to a disposable with its plastic packaging, plastic frame and single use (maybe dual use if a days worth of stubble). Compare this against a premium multiblade, again limited use on the multiblade and the blades are encapsulated in plastic. Pro/Con – Packaging – I would say the packaging is nice enough to be gift suitable, but I feel that Wilkinson missed an opportunity by using a plastic insert to hold the razor. A cardboard formed insert would have underlined the “eco” side of this. Overall – I am really happy with this razor and based on the build quality I suspect I will be using it for many years. If I somehow find a way of breaking it, I wouldn’t hesitate to replace it.

Typical Wilkinson quality blades. They work as expected. Good price. Very sharp and give a better, smoother shave than the drug store brands off the shelf. Not much more to say.
