Metal only. It does detect any metal however.

It is sealed and stainless so it is very water resistant. It's not made to be submersed in water, though it could last for a time underwater. The sensor can take a light stream of water, but would likely fail under high pressure washdown over time.

How sensitive is this switch to aluminum? 4mm? 2mm? Thanks

Distance or thickness of material? I was able to trip it with a small aluminum tube but it had to make physical contact with the center of the switch.

Depends on if it a normally open or normally closed sensor.
