I don't do cross stitch, only regular hand embroidery. Would this cloth be suitable?

I don’t know a whole lot about embroidery, but this material does have holes in it since it’s made for cross stitch. The holes are smaller since it’s 18 count, but you would still need to double your floss to cover them. I think your best option would be to see if someone who does cross stitch would cut you a piece of fabric to try or maybe a local craft shop would do the same for you? Or, you can try it and if it doesn’t work, take out the stitches and resell it as used fabric. I hope that helps. Best of luck to you.

Did this shrink when you washed it? Is it stiff coming out of the package?

I did not wash this - I always avoid washing my finished projects and am meticulous about washing my hands before handling my projects. The fabric came out of the package soft and not as stiff as some other fabrics I've used.
