Inexpensive and works on both Mac and PC
I moved to an older historic building (circa 1853) with very thick brick/masonry/lath and plaster interior walls. The building has a "whole building" WiFi setup with routers on the first and 4th floors. My condo is on the second floor, immediately up the stairs from the first floor router and with pretty good line of sight placement for the WiFi signals. In fact in the front portion of my unit the signal is great. Unfortunately, I work from home and my office is in the rear of my unit - farthest from the router. As a result, I was getting very weak signals on both my Mac desktop and my work Windows laptop. I had an extender/adapter put in my front living room to boost the signal, but it didn't completely solve the problem. So after doing some research I tried one of these for my Mac (it plugs directly into the computer), did the setup (pretty straightforward) and was very pleased with the results. My reception and signal strength is now "very good" - not excellent, but certainly good enough to make it painless to use my Mac. It worked so well that I bought one for my work (Windows) computer as well. However, the installation software comes on a CD and my Windows laptop doesn't have a CD/DVD player!! So, after some head scratching, I put the CD in my Mac, copied the installation software to a USB drive, and put the USB drive into my laptop, and voila! it worked. Overall very satisfied, and the price was great and they even look nice.

Great product but Win 8.1 needs a driver download/reinstall
You need to follow Stephen Sherwood's advice on the Win 8.1 install. It crashed my Win 8.1 after installing from the default CD, but after the original CD install, download the 8.1 drivers from netis.com; unzip to a folder and run setup.exe; restart then plug in and all is well. The realtek utility installed is great as you can see all the signal strength % of wifis around, adjust your aerial direction and refresh to see it go up/down. Great value product, just beware on Win 8.1. The USB caddy worked fine for me.

Negative reviews are nuts... Or had pre-existing / special-case issues. A+++ for this adapter.
Pros: Everything. Cons: Too many pros. _________________________ No idea what the negative reviews of this product are all about, unless people ordered from shady companies, got a defective unit, or had their own personal ignorance/technical issues that caused them problems with their system and the adapter. Installed driver, plugged it in, working beautifully. The wireless router is about 75' away from me through several floors and walls, I have 100% connection and 100% quality. It's boosted the speed and connectivity to my router, and I went from being about to see 3-6 wireless networks in my area to being able to see, on average, 25 different networks. Many of these are at full and or half speed. There are only about 15 houses within 500-750' of our house, so needless to say, this adapter is picking up some serious distance. Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I know what I'm doing so my system isn't riddled with issues prior to installing this adapter unlike the majority of computer owners these days. The long usb cable and weighted (Yes, it's weighted so it won't tip over) dock is a major plus. The unit is about 5' away from my computer at the moment on a high shelf in the room. 100% satisfaction and would recommend to anyone needing that little oomph, or a lot of oomph, to their wifi.

Great signal pickup when it works, but has driver issues that make it unusable
Works significantly better than the one built into the machine. I was getting on average about 40mbps to the router, with some fluctuations down as low as 1mbps. With this now I sustain 270mbps with dips occasionally going down to 140mbps. I also see about 6 other networks in my neighborhood that my old adapter did not even register. Easily worth the money. Have only had it a couple days, but will update if it breaks. Update: I am now having the same problems that many other people are reporting. This adapter will just randomly disconnect from my computer -- not just dropping WiFi, but it will fail to be recognized as a USB device at all. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to make it work. This is extremely frustrating to have to do multiple times every day. I will be purchasing a different adapter, would not recommend this one.

It's Decent, Until It Breaks
This works fairly well, until it breaks. I didn't use this too heavily, and it currently does not work at all anymore. The USB part is also bent, despite me having not subjected it to much stress at all (the only stress it suffered from was gravity). Although, it had a very large range and decent speeds while it was working. To be honest though, I would probably try to find a more durable wireless adapter.

Cheap. Effective. Easy.
Many repeaters do not have good product documentation or they require you to reconfigure your network. This thing could not have been easier. I found the product driver on their website here > [...] I have a MacBook Pro with no disc reader so digital downloads only. Check. Plug. and. Play. The signal is lightning fast. I typed Youtube.com in my address bar and it seemed to have loaded before I hit enter. I am about 50 feet from the router, in a house next door with poor cell signal area so like very dead-spot-ish. I feel like I'm just now being reintroduced to the internet in general. OH all the things I will learn! all the videos I will stream! Shout out to Amazon Prime for delivering in 36 hours. That's dope.

Strong and solid signal
This works well for me. I'm running Windows 7 and all I did was install drivers off the CD that came with this. To connect to my router, this has to send the signal through 3 walls and a floor, approx 40 feet away. As I sit here typing this, I have 4/5 signal strength. I get decent speeds too. I just did a speed test and got 55mb download and 11mb upload. I pay for 150mb download service, but for wireless, this isn't bad. The hardwired devices get the full speed I pay for (wired is almost always going to be faster than wireless) so I'm happy. It may take you a while to find the right spot to install this device for maximum signal strength, but once you find that you shouldn't have to move it any more.

This is an update on January 21 2019, puchased early September 2015. This is the orginal comment I made: "Easy install, have bought for friend who loves it too for their out-building. Would buy again." Yesterday I was at the same friends out in their outbuilding, he was trying to get connected with it (about 50 meters from the router) and it wouldn't light up. (this antenna has been outside in the elements in eastern canada since purchased). My friend thought it must finally be dead, I agreed. We brought it inside and dried it out because it had been raining all day, plugged it in, turns out it was just wet. Put it back outside (still raining out, it just hangs by the usb upside down), connected right away and got 90% link quality. (using the netis program 90%), it had registered about the same link quality a couple of weeks earlier with a different program. I was testing an alfa card with with a high gain directional antenna then and needed a different program. EDIT a year later. Netis has hung upside down for near another year, was -7 celcius tonight and it stayed connected 100 feet from the house, about 115 feet from the modem. Insane. It hangs from outside the top of a roll up door in the box from an old reefer truck which sits up on blocks. Its barely under any cover and doesn't get much intense sun from the direction it sits. Gets lots of open wind, rain, snow, heat from the wood stove which is about 4 feed away directionally and about 4 feet down (stoves in the truck box which is insulated because its a reefer truck).
