Not for the Squimish
I am at odds on how to review Wolf's Hour. I enjoyed it, really enjoyed it, but I also had some problems with it. So to keep it simple :ProsInteresting story line- heroic, compassionate, spy who also is a werewolf, whose mission is to gather some very disturbing information about Nazi plans to thwart D-Day invasionWriting style- very moving, vivid description that successfully builds a world , time, and conflicted protagonist that grabs the reader's heart with both emotion and suspense. He could, at times, get too wordy, but most of the time was right on point.Dual story line by flashback- I loved the background story that offered the reader the chance to see not only how Michael became this werewolf but also how he developed his personal philosophy on life, the world, and finally the answer to his reoccurring question posed by his "father" figure: "what is the lycanthrope in the eyes of God?"Intrigue- mission to stop Nazis from releasing chemical warfareRomance- that depends on how each person describes "romance". There are several love scenes, and very explicit, I might add. But only one real relationship and even it is secondary. I would say romance is definitely not the main story but a very satisfying part.ConsBook Cover- For some, this is not important. For me, it is. Although I have considered reading this book for years, I did not before. Unfortunately, I hated the cover, so I always ended up putting it down. I only read it this time because it was offered on Kindle for 1.99.Supporting characters not well developed, stereotypedLength- could have been better served with one or two less capture-escape scenesGore- Very heavy on explicit gore scenes, bloody and a lot of description, a little too gruesome for some. I, not one for gore, had to skim some parts. On the whole. I found this a very enjoyable read, but definitely not for all tastes.Reading Progress10/09 marked as: currently-reading10/23 marked as: readPost a comment »CommentsNo comments have been added yet.Notify me when people commentcommentadd book/author (some html is ok) (preview)Add to my Update Feed *Notify me when people reply *Blog This Review[...]My rating: [...]I am at odds on how to review Wolf's Hour. Another Robert McCammon Gem
I have read almost all of Robert McCammon books and have enjoyed them all. Swan Song being my favorite. This is my second time reading the Wolves Hour and can’t wait to read the sequel. Plenty of action and a little romance, Great characters and storyline. Enjoy!

But the reviews on the book were mostly excellent and I just felt like I was ready for ...
This is the first McCammon book I've read. I wasn't quite sure about the plot: a werewolf spy fighting for the Allies against the Nazis. I thought it might be 'kinda out there'. But the reviews on the book were mostly excellent and I just felt like I was ready for a werewolf adventure. I read the book on a Kindle so about 30% into the book (which I had been enjoying) I decided to read something else (I do that on occasion)...5 books later, I picked up where I left off with The Wolf's Hour telling myself I needed to finish this book even though it's quite long. I don't know what happened exactly but suddenly I was completely gripped by this story! You know how you hear any number of people say when reviewing a book that "I couldn't put it down", well, that happened to me! I could not put this book down! I went into one of those binge reading modes and kept telling myself, "just one more chapter"..."just one more"..."just...", well, you get the picture. I was completely absorbed in the story, the characters, the pace & plotting, the action (even the brief romance)...and the author's writing style. The backstory of how the protagonist, British Secret Service, Michael Gallatin, became a werewolf and the family of werewolves he grew up with was equally fascinating and provided needed information for the current story of a werewolf spy seeking information of a new Nazi secret weapon and trying to stop it. The story all fit together to make sense and seemed "normal". I highly recommend this book. I totally enjoy McCammon's writing style. I've already started his Boy's Life and purchased several others of his works as well. All the glowing stuff so many of these reviewers have been saying about McCammon and his works - it's all true - he's a masterful story teller and so understand the human condition! If one of his books strikes your fancy, do yourself a favor and give it a chance - odds are you'll love it and become a fan.Regarding McCammon's writing style, I don't know what you'd call it, but I say this about it: it's straightforward, simple, uncomplicated yet thorough and detailed enough to describe the scenes of where things are happening so that you see it and the feelings of the people involved in what's happening to feel it! He does not waste words nor adds them needlessly. His writing draws you into the story so that you become a part of it. The writing does not get in the way of the story, it's as if the writing is nothing more than a door that opens into a world, a story that you see and feel what's going on - you almost forget the words and live the story. Maybe that's the key to any great author/story-teller - for you just to experience it. McCammon does just that!

Great read
Loved this book. Lots of action, well structured and good writing with a touch of the supernatural. My first by this author but will be reading more. Would liked to gave seen the protagonist transform into more of a monster but this would probably have led the story astray.

Very happy I purchased this book
This is a very interesting and exciting book. A combination of myth and modern, a really good read. Great plot, good characters, great story I loved it.Just two little mistakes the mention of antibiotics and plastic. Plastic not yet common or known and antibiotics only used in Britain for their soldiers.

Excellent wartime thriller with a supernatural twist
Here is something that should appeal to fans of thrillers and horror. Author Robert R McCammon has masterfully blended the two genres by creating his central character Michael Gallatin, a Russian immigrant now living in Wales working for British Intelligence as an agent during the Second World War.The action moves from the theatre of war: North Africa and Europe then back to Gallatin's upbringing in Russia. In this way the narrative keeps the reader hooked on his exciting and daring mission to find another agent with information vital to the Allied war effort whilst simultaneously informing the reader of the events and experiences that shaped him.As the title suggests Gallatin is no ordinary individual, he is in fact a werewolf! This makes the novel interesting and original, what could have been a standard `boys own' war story is given a dark supernatural twist with a hero who uses his powers to assist him with his dangerous mission. As the story unfolds it is clear that Gallatin will need all of his wits and years of experience to draw on as well as his abilities. There are also some colourful side-kicks to help him along the way as well as plenty of mysterious and alluring women. The villains he finds himself up against are particularly nasty and include a sadistic game hunter, a high ranking officer and a scientist all sympathetic to the Nazi cause. With D-Day imminent and everything riding on the Allied invasion being a success Gallatin and his friends must foil the Nazi's sinister plans known only as `Iron Fist.'This novel kept me hooked throughout and it works on both levels as a wartime thriller and horror story. McCammon has the same prose style as James Bond creator Ian Fleming so everything is given a vivid immediacy. It so easily could have entered the realms of farce but McCammon's execution and literary skill ensures that this is a first rate thriller with a nicely handled twist. I highly recommend adding this original thrill-fest to your Kindle collection.

Historical fiction at its most imaginative
I think I would call this speculative Horror. Vibrant characters, imaginative storyline, and a good dose of escapism. Highly recommended.
