Gigolo

I'd place half of dozen of Lee's albums ahead of The Gigolo. At best, place it a distant 3rd after The Sidewinder and Cornbread (with "Ceora" and Hank Mobley's support). On Gigolo you get Wayne Shorter, whose limitations are apparent (to my ears) when his solo is followed by Lee's more melodic and musical improvisation (as on "Speedball"). "You Go to My Head" is an intriguing set of changes that never wears out--providing its taken seriously and as a ballad (check out Desmond's versions with Brubeck). The version on The Gigolo comes up short because, after an intriguing intro by Cranshaw's bass, Mabern's piano repeats a corny cha-cha figure, which is taken up by Lee. A lame end to an otherwise pretty good album.

届いたCDのケースに長い亀裂が入ってました。もう何回亀裂が入っていたことか。今までに何回もですよ？アルバムはとても良いものだけど、Amazonの配送クオリティの悪さにはもう呆れてしまいます。きっと改良する気もないのでしょう。５回配送あるとすれば４回はCDケースに亀裂が入ってます。さて、アルバムですが、リーモーガンの作品の中ではあまり目立たない作品かもしれませんが、全曲捨て曲無しの名盤だと思います。が、最悪の配送クオリティのため、テンションだだ下がりです。それと！Amazonの商品表示にルディヴァンゲルダーエディションと表示されてますが、違いますよ！！何を勘違いされてるんですか！ちゃんと訂正してください！！

デビュー時のはつらつとしたプレイはいう事ないが、この頃のサイドワインダーとか、本作のように多方面へのアプローチを始めたあたりも味わい深い。とくに日本人には「月の砂漠」のメロディーが、なんとも妙にしみてくるものである。未聴の方はぜひご一聴を。
