Cartridges of the World, 16th Edition: A Complete and Illustrated Reference for Over 1,500 Cartridges

I was given an old 1969 copy of this book back in the 1980's, this is a current updated version. Though this version is a bit dryer to read than the older one I have, it is Packed full of information that most do not know. This book lists and gives a brief history on Cartridges, pistol, rifle, shotgun and wildcat from the past through the most current cartridges as of the print date. From calibers made here in the USA to foreign calibers. It also lists some reloading information or if the cartridge is no longer made, what the factory load was. This is an essential book for the gun collector, re-loader, historian or anyone that is into firearms and or the history of them.If possible, try and grab some older ones at yard sales, swap meets or flee markets. Some of the older information gets dropped as updated books come out and some of the older writers are better with some humorous bits in their writing. It is a writing style that has been lost today. If you are able to grab one of the older copies you will see what I mean. But this copy is a great source of information.

I write about guns and cartridges quite often, and this book is a must-have for any serious writer -- as all we gun writers know.

The good:This book has a lot of information, especially on extinct cartridges.Does a good job of giving historical thumbnail information on a specific cartridge, or a small group of like cartridges.Discusses a few prototype cartridges.The not so good:The print and photo quality could be better for the price. The pages are gray with black ink and the pictures are black and white and the reason for a 4 star rating. My personal preference would be a white page with color photographs, which would aid in reading and cartridge identification if needed.

So very useful to identify cartridges. Also a useful history of each cartridge listed with illustrations, specifications, load data and ballistic data. This book has been around for decades in many editions. Each edition gets better the ones before.

I love these BooksThey have a lot of great info, history and extra data on Rounds you use, and on Ammo you may have never heard of before

With each edition, this is getting better. A few years ago they removed some material and put it on a CD, in order to free up space for "newer" cartridges. It was a reasonable solution but I am glad that they put everything back in and the bigger book is not a problem. There are still some "old" cartridges that are missing and it would be nice to have them included but you cannot find a better overall reference source.

A very, very comprehensive coverage of the subject matter, this is a genuine one-stop volume about military and hunting cartridges, old and new, for hand-held firearms (my only, trivial, quibble is that it does not include details of older, super-heavy machine gun ammo). A genuine book-you-can't-do-without. Almost every cartridge has its photo and full technical details available.
