An explanation for some problems
This is an excellent product. I took a moment to understand how it works to figure out why some users have had problems with it. The problems with removing the cork probably stem from improper usage due to the poor documentation. Here's how it works. The lever that you swing back and push down moves the corkscrew up and down by a gear and rack mechanism, this is pretty obvious from looking at it. The worm screw is mounted so that it could spin freely if there were no guide mechanism (the metal and plastic part near the hand clamps that the cork screw slides through). The guide mechanism causes the screw to turn as it is pressed down through it. The rotation lets the screw wind into the cork on the downstroke of the lever. The guide mechanism is initially held in a fixed position by two spring loaded latches on either side of the top of it. These latches are pulled back, thereby releasing the guide mechanism when the clamping handles are squeezed on a bottle. With the guide mechanism free to move, and the screw held tightly by the cork, when the lever is pulled back, the guide mechanism moves with the screw and hence does not drive the screw's rotation so the cork is pulled out. This is the part that is not clear in the instructions. Removing the cork HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW TIGHT YOU GRIP IT WITH THE HANDLES. You must move the lever all the way back forward to remove the cork. Part way, you will feel resistance, this is due to the latches that have now closed since the clamp arms are no longer squeezing on the neck of a bottle. (When you squeeze on a bottle, the hinged ends are forced apart, which opens the latches). The latches are angled so if you use some force you will push the guide mechanism through the latches (just like when you close a door with a spring loaded bolt) and they will snap back into place, locking the guide mechanism down. Now, the guide mechanism can no longer move and acts as a stop for the cork. Now, when you pull back on the lever, the guide causes the screw to rotate and unscrew from the cork which cannot move up because of the latched guide mechanism. Squeezing on the handles only stops the cork from falling on the floor. It's really an ingenious design.

Be Careful Out There
We purchased one about two years ago and at first it worked great, for about two months. Then it simply stopped lifting the cork. It would screw into the cork, then, when it was supposed to lift the cork, it would instead back out. I called the company and they said I was not using it correctly. Really? I took some time to examine the mechanism. It is actually a two step process, There are to parts that move: the screw, which is directly connected to the handle via the gear mechanism and then the floating arm that allows the cork to lift or extract the cork from the screw. Seems when you make the first lift the handle, once it extends fully, the arm is supposed to seat against the cork. Mine would not complete the seat process. So I fooled with it using really loose corks, etc., and finally got to function correctly. It then worked as advertised for about three more months. Then pieces began falling off. There are these little football shaped oval inserts on either side of the floating arm, they began to come out of either side on a regular basis and the pin can work out. Not good. The the main gear pin fell out. WTF? There is some sort of cap that is pushed in one side to hold it. Honestly, not a screw or anything like that, but just a fitting. Try putting that back together correctly after you've had a couple glass of wine that you struggled to open. Exasperating. Finally, one of the arms simply broke off while trying to extract a synthetic cork. I've gone back to a good old trusty manual lever opener that served me well through two years of bar tending in college. When the Metrokane works, it worked great. But I mostly found this a great mechanical design assembled with inferior parts and equally poor securing of said pats. These guys need to look at how a Harley is build.

Highly recommend! Professionally open bottles of wine with ease! No need to struggle or hold the bottle between your knees!
I love drinking wine, however, I save my money for wine and will use regular house-hold cork screws to open the bottles. As long as the cork doesn't break, I was happy with the cheap cork screws. My friend kept talking about the Rabbit, and she too had the same mentality as I did. So when it came to buying her a birthday present, I thought that this gift would suit her great, because I knew she would not but one herself. She was super happy when she opened her present and tried it out straight away. When it came time to open the second bottle, I tired out her gift and well, that was the end of getting by using cheap cork screw openers for me! The ease of opening a bottle of wine was shocking! No more holding the bottle between your knees or struggling to get the cork out with breaking it. It is worth using the foil cutter which is shaped like an oversized bottle cap because it will make your Rabbit last longer. Just fit it over the top of the bottle, squeeze, and turn to cut the foil off the bottle. Then it's Rabbit time! Position the corkscrew opener on top of the bottle of wine, pull the lever back, then push it forward so that the screw goes into the cork (whether it is a true cork or plastic), and then pull back the lever to pull up the cork. To get the cork out of the cork screw, hold the two Rabbit handles together, pull back the lever and push it forward. Very easy, great if you do not have a lot of strength, and it makes a lovely noise, just like the noise the bartenders make when opening a bottle of wine at your favorite wine bar! I have bought the Rabbit Original Lever Corkscrew set for myself, and many people as present. I hope that you have found my opinion to be helpful with your decision process to purchase this item. If this is the case, and where Amazon asks if this review helpful, please click "yes". Thank you!

Amazingly simple
This cork screw is the easiest I have every used. I bought one for myself about 5 years ago. Recently I had some difficulty removing the corks and noticed that the rubber grip had torn. Metrokane replaced the unit for a shipping charge of $10, no questions asked. Not bad for a 5 year old cork screw. When a friend of mine mentioned she wanted to try one I couldn't resist buying it for her as a housewarming gift. She loves hers as well. The only challenge with this products is that it is not obvious when the screw wears. The unit becomes difficult to use which makes you think the unit is wearing out when the problem is likely the screw. It is coated with teflon so you must be careful to remove the foil or wax on the top of the bottle. Apparently this will significantly shorten the life of the screw (no wonder the first one wore out so fast) But, the screw is easy to replace and does last a while if cared for properly. Great product, great value!

The best cork screw!
I have worn two of these out, and each have lasted 10-15 years. I love these. Easy to use, get the cork out of the bottle, and get the cork off of the device. After trying multiple different kinds, this is the one for me!

Too unreliable
Unfortunately, it only works about 60% of the time. When it does, it's very nice. When it doesn't, it's a time consuming bad experience. The corkscrew just keeps going in and out and is not worth the struggle to get a cork out, or the cork bits in the wine. The side pins have to pop out, which they don't always do even with full pinching of the handles, and even then, it doesn't always raise with the cork. Roughly a year and half use and I'm replacing it. I wouldn't recommend it.

Does not consistently remove corks
Update 7/4/2024: This Rabbit Corkscrew has one job to do: remove corks from wine bottles. It fails to do this job. If you buy this thinking it will remove wine corks from bottles, you will be sorely disappointed. The second Rabbit I received had the same issues as the first. I had hoped the first Rabbit was somehow a defective device and got a replacement, but now 2 different units failed in the same way. In short, it does not consistently work. See the attached photos to see the results. It failed to remove the cork 3 times on one bottle type, succeeded 2 times on another bottle type, and failed on a third bottle type. Of 3 different styles of wine bottles tested, it failed to remove the cork on 2 of them. In my opinion, it is a mistake to purchase this product if you expect it to operate like the older style Rabbit, or Rabbit-type corkscrews. Original review follows: Like other 1 star reviewers, my (first) Rabbit corkscrew did not work correctly. I had previously owned a rabbit style opener with essentially the same design and operation, so I know how they are supposed to work (the previous opener broke after several years use). The way it should work is you place the opener on the bottle, and apply a reasonable amount of pressure to squeeze the handles together. The pressure on the handles around the neck of the bottle causes two โcogsโ to pull into the device. You can see the cog pins stick out from the side as you press the handles together, and if you look closely you can see the cogs move into the housing. This is easiest to see before you engage the corkscrew into the cork. With my previous corkscrew, the handles were about 1-1/2โ apart in order to pull these cogs into the housing, the pressure like a firm handshake. Activate the lever and run the corkscrew down into the cork. Maintaining the pressure on the handles, lift the lever to pull the cork out of the bottle, With the cogs pulled into the housing, it allows the sliding piece to move up the guide shaft with the cork, retaining the cork on the screw. When you remove the Rabbit from the bottle, the cogs spring back out. This retains the sliding piece when you run the lever back down. When the lever is pulled back up the piece is held in place by the cogs, ejecting the cork. Thatโs how it should work. On my new Rabbit, the cogs did not pull into the housing until the two handles were essentially touching. The amount of force required to get to this position was excessive, and very difficult to maintain. If you did a handshake with this amount of force, the recipient would complain. Thinking I just needed to squeeze the handles as hard as possible to make it work, I tried pulling the cork out using this excessive handle pressure (I did this several times by putting a cork back into the bottle). Infrequently it would work, and the cork would come out. Often the sliding piece would get part way up the guide before stopping, so the cork was not fully removed from the bottle (one of the video reviews above shows this happening). Most of the time, the sliding piece would just remain down on the bottle (held by the cogs), so the corkscrew would go into the cork, then just pull back out again when the lever was lifted. I am hoping this was some sort of manufacturing defect, so I have returned the first Rabbit (thanks Amazon for such a painless return process!), and as of July 1, 2024, Amazon is sending a replacement. I will update this review once I test the replacement Rabbit corkscrew. For now, a 1 star rating is accurate.
