I had some friends years ago who used to keep an owl statue near their in ground swimming pool, to keep ducks from landing in the pool. And it worked well. This owl statue is even better, because the head rotates. When the little solar panel gets sun, the head rotates every 2 minutes and makes a fairly loud clicking noise. The head even moves around if it gets somewhat windy. It's sort of like a bobble-head, and it doesn't take much for the head to move. I understand there's people on here writing negative reviews and showing pictures of a bird sitting in the same vicinity as the owl. I have a large deck and it's surrounded by bushes and fairly large arborvitaes. I would constantly have at least 50+ birds in the trees and bushes in the morning & evening. They were extremely loud, especially when the sun comes up. My deck was constantly coated with bird poop, hence the reason I purchased this owl. Fast forward to 3 months later....I'm a Believer! I haven't had bird poop on my deck in a few months now. Sure, a bird does land in the trees around my deck on occasion, but then it sees the owl or hears the clicking noise and it takes off. It took about a month for the birds to completely clear out, so give it a chance. They come back to their home trees, and eventually keep noticing a predator (the owl), so they stop coming. I still get the occasional bird, but it doesn't stay long, and that's much better than the 50+ birds. So don't believe the negative reviews. If you need to get rid of birds, this thing really works! It's even quite durable. It's lightweight, and has taken a few spills off my deck railing due to strong winds. It's fallen about 6 feet on at least 3 occasions & the head came off a couple times, but it simply pops right back on. There's a 1 3/4" diameter hole in the bottom, and I plan on mounting the owl to my deck using some PVC pipe & a floor flange. Definitely glad I purchased this and I would highly recommend it.

I used this in my backyard garden and it did a wonderful job of deterring the squirrels and birds. I had almost zero bite marks in my 10' x 20' veggie garden. I read many of the reviews before purchasing so I could customize my installation to give the most effect. This is a very realistic looking model, it even had my cat on edge while un-boxing. But once she got close enough to smell / inspect it, she was no longer fooled. While the owl looks intimidating, any animal could tell the difference up close. Solution: keep the owl at least 5-10 feet from the nearest perch that a bird or squirrel could inspect it from. I mounted the owl on a 10 ft. aluminum pole in the center of my garden where a pest couldn't possibly come close enough to tell the difference between a plastic scarecrow and real peril. It seemed to work because the squirrels that used to raid the garbage cans are now too nervous to come anywhere near the area. Only other issue I noticed was the owl sits awkwardly on a bare pole because of the hollow cavity not being balanced on the center of gravity. This was easily fixed by placing a 12" x 1" pvc pipe in the owl's cavity and filling the gaps with spray-foam. The owl stands straight and securely on the aluminum pole now and can easily be slid off/on. This setup with the pole and pvc base allows me to install the owl anywhere I want pretty quickly, although I haven't noticed it lose effect from keeping it in the same spot. In fact, I've kept it outside for 9 months straight now; through summer storms and winter snows, and it's still clicking and spinning like new. I think if the company included some installation equipment or if people took the time to craft these alternative solutions, a lot more reviews would be 5 stars. This really is a great product! Glad I took a chance with it.

I bought this and the wind powered owl for squirrels. So far, so good. The squirrel population has thinned and will hopefully remain so. This model is a great idea and is endlessly entertaining. I especially like that no batteries are required. The solar panel is used in conjunction with a capacitor. When the solar panel charges the capacitor to a point, the capacitor discharges and powers the motor. Very nice design. When I first tried it, the head would catch on something and never fully rotate. I finally stuck my finger into the head and felt a wire that seemed to be obstructing full rotation. I gently pushed it against the inside wall of the head and since, it's been dutifully and fully rotating it's head. It also helps to keep the base as level as possible. The solar panel seems to be very efficient, working even on overcast days. The real test of this and the wind powered owl will be when the young squirrels emerge later this spring but so far so good. Update, 05/12/2011: the squirrels are gone. It's almost errie. At this time of year, the baby squirrels are usually out in force. I haven't seen one in several weeks. Normally there are at least a few at running around, playing and observing during daylight hours. After placing this owl on a fence and a wind powered owl on a pole, the squirrels are completely gone. The downside is that the birds are too. Only the Mockingbirds and Cardinals are present in their usual numbers. I can't quite bring myself to believe that this owl is responsible but I have no other explanation. The next test will be later in the season when the pecans start to grow but for the time being, I have to say this is a very effective squirrel deterrent. Another Update, 08/13/2015: the squirrels long ago figured out that this was little more than an anoyance and can be ignored. It seemed to work the first season or two. Moving it around didn't help. I finally had to toss it when wasps built a form fitted nest inside the head. It looked at first like the owl grew a brain. Because the nest was so tightly wrapped around the interior 'works', it was too difficult to scrape the nest off.

I love this product, in fact, I have purchased three of them—not becasue they aren;t well made, they are. I put them up on a shelf outside my living room window - I have a raised ranch, so the shelf is one and a half stories off the ground. Windstorms keep knocking the guy down, though I fill him with some fishing weights. If I ever remember to weight him down a bit more, he'll last indefinitely. It isn't that the owl breaks, just the post that holds his moveable head on bends, then he won't turn his head. The solar panel makes his head turn when he's in the sun, and he turns randomly, not in a pattern, so he looks real. In fact, my neighbor's dog barks at him. If it isn;t sunny out, the breeze will turn his head. He is life size and colored in realistic owl colors. Durable plastic. Birds don't like him. I bought him becasue I have grackles and starlings pecking holes in my screen to get bugs or whatever. They swarmed me like an Alfred Hitchcock movie no kidding. I put Hooty up there about three years ago and never have had another problem. The birds sit in a tree and yell a thim, but they never come near my window. As soon as he gets tumbled down in a storm, I buy another. My grandkids and I like seeing him perched out there and more than once guests have had to take a second look to make sure he isn't a real owl. :) If you put him in the garden or on the porch, he'd last forever. In fact, I put the two that fell down out on my deck.

We built a pool with a cascade waterfall in Las Vegas (desert) so we were visited by a couple dozen pigeons and black birds everyday with the accompanying mess. I didn't want the unsightly spikes or sticky goop around the pool so I thought I would try a predator replica. The idea of the solar powered head on a horned owl seemed like a good concept. The owl is about 1 1/2 ft tall, very life-like in looks and size. There is nothing to do to get it started, just remove the tag and stand it in the yard. The slightest light in the morning gets it going and it is active until the last light in the evening. The head always rotates in the same direction (doesn't matter) on intervals that vary from about 15 seconds to about 2-3 minutes. The rotations can be from a partial turn to several complete revolutions. Very unpredictable which adds to the realism. It makes a slight audible click when the rotation starts. I thought this might be an issue by alerting the birds it was about to move but just the opposite occurs. In case the bird might not be looking toward the owl when it starts it's movement the click gets the bird's attention assuring the bird will see it. The first birds to arrive after I put it by the waterfall stopped their dive into the yard to land on a privacy wall around the pool area. There was a lot of head tilting as they checked it out to see if it was real or not. As soon as it moved it's head the birds took off in all directions as fast as they could go. The birds returned to sit on the perimeter wall everyday for a few weeks. Sometimes one brave bird in the flock would land to "test the waters" but as soon as the head turned they all scrammed like somebody fired a load of buckshot at them.. The test visits came less and less frequent until, after a couple months, they stopped altogether. We have not had ANY birds in the yard this entire summer even though I can see them in the neighbors' yards. I did not mount it on a stake as the instructions suggests. Instead I filled it with about 10 lbs of sand through an opening in the bottom to give it some weight. This allowed me to move it to different parts of the yard every so often. I did move it a couple times a week at first but have found that now that the birds are convinced it's real I only move it once a month or so. The problem birds that I had to deal with in my neighborhood were pigeons, crows, and blackbirds. They have NEVER returned to the water and stopped flying over the house after the first few weeks. A great item.

Oh My Word! I am so happy I bought Hooty! He saved my tomatoes and my pocketbook! Everyday when I would go to harvest our summer tomatoes I would discover they all had one single bite missing from each and every one of them. And since I don't want to share samonella poisoning with the birds, I needed a solution. Originally, I tried topping my cages with mylar strips to no avail. THE VERY DAY I put hooty's mean lookin' self out by my tomatoes - he worked and the birds were gone that day! His head spins around like the exorcist at each timely interval. It's enough to scare anything! One interesting thing to note; once I rid my backyard of the robins, blue jays and mockingbirds, I was a tad over-run with June Bugs. Such is the circle of life. These little beatles were now safe since there were no predator birds. They didn't last long though, about a week. I am happy to report a garden full of tomatoes all bite free. (That is until I get ahold of them!) My neighbor uses a hooty too to keep the birds from fraternizing on her deck. A local restaraunt has one on their portico for the same reason. For both of them it works well! The only tricky thing, he is much lighter than one would imagine. Loading him up with sand is a must if you have any kind of wind. I <3 Hooty!

I ordered Owl because we had a pair of ducks who had somehow discovered our tiny little pool, and had proceeded to land on the deck every day, swim in the pool, fowl the pool, the deck, everything, with their fowl poop. So, after an internet search on how to scare away ducks, I ordered Owl. Technically, Owl does everything it is described to do. It looks real. It looks mean. The solar-powered head turns, as long as the sun can hit the solar panel. We moved it around the pool, as suggested. The ducks weren't fooled. They kept coming, sometimes flying near or landing right next to Owl. I'm pretty sure by now they have Friended Owl on Facebook. We resorted to other measures . . . and we appear to have gotten rid of the ducks . . . first by spraying them with the hose whenever they arrived (they always announce their arrival with their quacks), sometimes by throwing tennis balls at them (never hitting them, because our aim isn't that good, but good enough to scare them) and then by hanging / stringing obstacles over the pool to make it uninviting to land / swim in. Haven't seen them in about a week. Owl has filed a grievance for loss of companionship. The good news about Owl is that a stray cat ventured into our back yard the other day, stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Owl, then slowly backed away and exited the yard via the same path he had entered. Wish I had a video of that. I don't think they are Friends on Facebook yet.

When taking the owl out of its packaging, the head came off (should have been secured with a simple strip of adhesive connecting the head to the body). Its self explanatory, but it took me too long to realize I should spin the head to get it going (me being an airhead). PROS: Overall, I cant imagine my garden continuing without this owl. (1) Its well made, realistic looking and I look forward to seeing its rotating head and large vibrant eyes. (2) I also like that each spin leaves the owl looking in different directions. (3) My cucumbers, melons and other crops near the owl made it through the season (so far) without disturbance from our resident chipmunks & squirrels. (4) Also a pro - waterproof, solar-powered, no batteries, no cords! (5) I also appreciated that the packaging was not obsessive - just a tag around the neck & a small plastic covering (which I reused). CONS: (1) My husband expressed his concern that the owl would scare away our local birds (he enjoys bird-watching). I have unfortunately not seen too many lovely bluejays and cardinals this season. So I will say that the birds do stay away when the owl is in motion (which is good if thats your intention). (2) Also an issue is that the motion detector or owl head is easily triggered off by simple contact: on several occasions, a single leaf of cucumber foliage grew too close to the owl’s neck opening and the spinning motion stopped completely, so I had spin the head manually to reset the motion. MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDATION: I would love if the manufacturer made a version of this owl for night-time use (with glowing eyes and sound as an option) b/c though the owl has worked during the day, I need something for our night-time deer problem. If they manufactured such a product, I would definitely buy it as another garden companion!

This owl is brilliant, looks real from a distance. It kept pigeons away for a while but they get used to it. It does say keep moving it around but one can't if it's secured down. Packaging was not brilliant but arrived in good order, its also a bit pricey. But hey it's ok.

到着予定日の10日間遅れの到着 でも特に連絡もなくビニール袋につつまれただけでの到着のため袋をあけたら破損した部品がおちてくる始末・・・ 破損しているところはソーラーで首振りになるための部品で爪の先くらいの大きさのもの。アメリカから郵送されているみたいなので時間がかかるのは仕方がないとしても壊れてしまうような送り方って・・・きっと交換を依頼してもあのような郵送の仕方では同じだと思い交換依頼はしませんでした。ものとしては悪くないと思います。首はただのせているだけでソーラーで頭の内側にある部品がうごいて首を動かすしくみのようです。その重要な部品が破損していたわけですね。軽いので底にある穴に砂など入れておかないと風でたおれて首も落ちてしまいそうな気がします。
