Managers of all colors will find this an indispensable crash course
This book extends patient safety research into corrections and points out how the corrections environment complicates patient safety, but the basic research applies across the board. Dr. Schoenly summarizes a lot of complicated research succinctly; there isn't room for much fluff in this slim but information-packed book. The references lists alone are worth gold for anyone interested in corrections, patient safety, or both, and the tables that appear throughout suck the marrow out of the already-condensed text. Managers of all colors will find this an indispensable crash course, not only for improving patient safety but also for improving staff relations (which, accordingly, affect patient safety).

Great Guidance for Practitioners and Leadership
Dr. Schoenly has written a great primer on patient safety in the correctional environment. It is well written and easy to understand. It provides guidance without getting lost in unnecessary verbiage. A practitioner can sit down and read this in an evening, but more importantly keep it on their book shelve when there is a question. But as important as this book is to those who provide clinical care in the correctional environment, the guidance it provides to institutional management is outstanding. Depending upon the jurisdiction, people who oversee health care may not have a health care background. This book provides them with an understanding of what questions are so critical for them to ask and for them to know relative to patient care and safety. Anyone who has worked for long in correctional medicine knows that to be successful, neither custody or medical can be mutually exclusive. You cannot enjoy success without each other. This book superbly illustrates the need for collaboration to ensure that inmate patient care meets the standards of Estelle. The best part about it is you can read it in a few hours. Thank you Dr. Schoenly.

Best of all you don't need to be deeply studied ...
This is a timely tool for every correctional professional to have. NCCHC published new accreditation standards this year and patient safety is a prominent subject area. The book is well organized and presents a framework for patient safety that brings all the pieces together into a manageable area of focus for correctional health care programs. The material includes examples and is specific to the realities and uniqueness of the correctional setting. While the rest of health care has been trumpeting the cost and quality benefits of patient safety for some time, it has been a challenge for correctional health care to benefit as quickly because of the need to adapt and translate this information to our setting. No more; this book takes care of all that! Best of all you don't need to be deeply studied in the patient safety movement to use this material and benefit from safer patient care.

A Must-Read for Health Professionals who Work Behind Bars
Correctional Healthcare Patient Safety Handbook is a scholarly and practical guide for correctional health professionals to reduce the risk of unintentional harm to patients, harm that is often invisible to the public eye. This risk of harm is increased in an insular, command-control culture that sometimes has an unreasoning fear of change.

Excellent addition to your correctional healthcare library.
An excellent resource for any correctional institution and every correctional healthcare provider. I wish this resource had been available 30 years ago when I entered this field of nursing. Lorry Schoenly is changing correctional healthcare for the better.

Well researched and well written, correctional healthcare is long past due for discipline-specific and scholarly literature such as this. Correctional Health Care Patient Safety Handbook should be required reading for all correctional nurse managers.
