Good audio quality
Bought these to replace a set that never seemed to work when I needed them. The old set was powered by 4 AAA batteries. This radio is powered by 3 AA batteries. I used Enloop 2000maH rechargeable batteries rather than the 1000maH that came with the radios. The audio on these radios is very clear. Haven't tested the max range but have used them at about 1/2 mile, in the woods, and with hills between the two radios. No problem communicating with just the normal power setting. I haven't used the boost function yet as it was not needed. So far I am pleased with these radios. The true test will come when we use them on the ski slopes.

No volume or range!!
What a waste of money. Bought them for communication between two vehicles following each other. Went out of range in less than 1/10 of a mile. The volume is so low even on high that with the windows up you could barely here each other. Don't waste your money. Absolute JUNK!!!

Range sucks.
I purchased a return item for 30$ less guess it was returned because 1 unit wouldn't power up. The batteries in it were bad. Have not tested range yet, buttons feel good and unit is a good size. Belt clips look like a weak point. More testing and follow up review. Update: Range sucks. With trees and buildings these only work about a mile and cut out. My old cheap Motorola work about the same. Belt clip is stronger then I thought. Got these because they claim monster range. Nope!

A good-to-go option for short range communications
Purchased these radios for use out-of-doors in a mountainous environment in inclement weather conditions. The Uniden FRS models are not the cheapest on the market but they advertised submergibility and weren't covered in all sorts of garish, chromed-metal looking decor. The good: * Solid build quality. * They work at ranges of upwards of a mile in very mountainous terrain (no clear line of sight). * Lockout feature keeps fingers or gear from inadvertently changing channels. * Red display light preserves night vision. A very nice feature. * Battery life is excellent. Intermediate use over an 8-hour day resulted in 1/4 battery life remaining and radio-provided rechargeable batteries can be taken out and supplanted with any AAA battery. The Bad: * While they work in the mountains, they also demonstrated a lack of ability to receive comms in as little as a few hundred yards around switchbacks. That was both surprising and disappointing, especially since the "boost" button is supposed to push a signal 50 miles under ideal conditions. Lol! * Would like the volume to go lower than it does. Radio tends to receive and squawk loudly. * Setup was not the most intuitive. Manufacturers could learn a thing or two from the smartphone industry and make these things more layperson friendly. * Made in China Conclusion: Ultimately it is anticipated that these radios will be highly weatherproof since they advertise submergibility and it is hard to find waterproof FRS radios on the market, or was when we looked, so Uniden was the ticket. If you are in the market for an FRS radio, take some time, do the research, make the comparisons. There are a ton of options out there in this market.

Great for wooded hilly areas
I bought 2 sets of these for the family to use when we are out and about and separated. It was easy to setup and its nice to have drop in chargers. They have a great appearance and can get pretty loud. We went roughly 15 miles out in a hilly/wooded area and was still able to reach each other clear as day. I haven't tested to an extreme distance but 15 miles is quite the range still

Range.
Not tested in open field to see if the range is 50 miles. In city it seems somethimes the signal is lost. However for this amount should be fine.
