Is this a more difficult model to build than the Vitascope?

I've made both. The train is much harder. All gears will need sanded,waxed and checked each step to ensure smooth function. If you question how difficult a model is, check the part count. More parts = harder. Rubber band, geared models are harder to make run smooth as apposed to hand crank models. This train runs great but you need to fiddle with the gears and rods a while after its built to find any parts that rub, gear alignments etc...

Can it be taken apart easily and without damaging the pieces if you want to build it again and again?

These are not items that should be taken apart to build again. My teen boys have put together several from moderate to difficult. They take time and patience. On another note. If you get it together and something doesn't work, you can take it apart gently in order to fix the problem. Hope this helps.

What is the typical assembly time?

Give it about 27 to 30 hours of comfortable building time

hi i recently purchased this train but the elastic bands that go in the gear box snapped can i use regular elastics.

Some of them come split, because you need to tie them..... if they are all split I would dee what you can find that is the same weight as the ones sent... I do not know if normal bands are the same or not... best I can say is try it and see...or email/call the company ask for new ones...
