I bought this for my 8' stock tank pool to make it a hot tub during the winter. I read other mixed reviews that had also bought it for converting a stock tank pool to a hot tub. I gave it a try because I didn't want to setup a propane instant hot water tank setup. It did take a couple trips to the local hardware store to get all the proper fittings but I got it all connected and up and running. I did run into the same problem at first of the heater not kicking on so I tried taking the top cover off like others said they did and I tricked the switch to be on. Also I did have to plug it into a 20 amp plug. While I was trying different things, I had changed the filter on the Intex 1500 filter pump and noticed the flow switch was working like it should so I put it back together with no modifications and it works great, I just change the filter every 2 to 3 weeks and have no issues. I did also buy a Bayite temperature controller plug and plugged the filter pump into it on the heat plug and have the temp set to turn off at 100° and have it kick back on at 98°. I did have to change the plug on the Intex filter pump to a non GFI plug because every time the temperature control plug shut off when it reached 100° the GFI plug on the pump would pop off. I have had no issues in 2 months now and am loving it. It did take a few days to get up to temp, I live in the foothills of California and the temp here recently has been in the high 50's to low 60's during the day and mid to high 30's overnight and it keeps it to temp with no problems. I have a blue bubble cover and a black 8' pool cover on it to help keep in the heat.

The heater worked really good,, but it was short lived, I purchased it on June the 8th and I didn't install it until July for my outside jaccuzi, this is now September the 19th and it has stopped working so I probably used it I'm guessing 12 times ,it never operated constantly, I would turn it on or off after each use, the power supply was good and sufficient enough to run the pumps and the heater,I don't know how to contact the seller, so I guess I'll look for another brand,it was refreshing for these old bones of mine while it lasted, I was hoping to get at least a year out of it, I'm only 68 years old but I have a lot aches and pains that is reduced by getting in the hot tub it's also getting harder for me to get up and down to do mechanical work that's why I like the hot tub it's sad that the heater quit working after only 2 months,. The heating element is 2000W at 18 amps . And the thermostat is 16 amps. So guess what happens, it burnt out the contact points on the thermostat, and the overload protection switch did nothing to stop it from overheating and the knob on my thermostat MELTED. Not only that when I took the cover lid off there's moisture getting inside, it's a safety hazard. Buy something else, it will save your life.

I bought this to use to turn our 8ft diameter stock tank pool into a hillbilly hot tub. The reviews here are hit or miss, but I have nothing but positive things to say about it. We’re hitting 110 degrees, but here are a few critical tips if you’re using it with a stock tank pool. 1. Wire it up to a heavy duty plug and use it on an otherwise unused gfci protected outlet. I wired mine to a heavy duty outdoor extension cord and it works fine. 2. You need to have good flow from your pump in order for it to activate. Like someone else here posted, I epoxied a large fender washer to the metal flapper arm on the outlet side of the heater. Before that, even with our 1500gph Intex pump, the flow switch would only occasionally engage (you can see this if you remove the top cover and watch when you run water through it. With the washer it engages with authority. 3. It took me about an hour at Lowe’s to get the fittings together that would allow me to hook this up to my pump and outlet valve, but the most critical part was buying a length of flexible hose meant for pool cleaning accessories (also from Lowes) and a couple flexible rubber reducers. 4. The most important part that I learned was that these things take a good bit to get up to temp. I thought mine wasn’t working because I felt no heat from the unit in the first hour or two. The issue was that with a large 700 gallon tank like ours, the initial heat takes a good 12 hours. The water hit 95 degrees in 12 hours, but went all the way to its max of 110 degrees within another 6. Using it with a DIY insulated cover (1.5” rigid foam and redwood fenceboards) I only need to run it for a few hours a day to keep it around 100 degrees. Obviously this is no substitute for a 220v powered, and heavily insulated modern hot tub, but if you like the aesthetics of a rustic stock tank pool but want to use it when it gets cold, this is a solid way to go.

This is a good value and makes repair and building of a hot tub easy. I knocked down the stars for two reasons. 1. If this is for a repair, sometimes it will need to be installed after the pump in the flow of water. The instructions actually indicate an installation before the pump. And then the arrows on the pump are used to indicate water flow direction. The unit can be after the pump, but the flow switch only works in one direction. The arrows on the unit should point toward the pump, whether installed before or after the pump. So far in several weeks, I have not been able to get it to cycle correctly. It will heat the water to the set temperature and then shut off, but every time it recycles it heats to a higher temperature. I may have to reduce the rating to one star. I suspect some of the returns are related to this. The seller should have known this and answered some of the questions with it in mind. 2. In my case number 1 was not immediately obvious, because it didn't work either way. I finally took the cover off and accidentally discovered the actual limit switch was not seated corrected in the slot provided. It wasn't making contact with the metal flapper. With the water flow off I just pushed it down. It now works and I don't think it will work back up. But it was loose enough that it probably was displaced during shipping. The actual installation is fairly straight forward, even if convoluted. My tub had a 2" outlet so I had to reduce to 1 1/2"-heater-back up to 2". Then from the pump back to the tub from 2" to 1". All fittings are easy to find. It will not heat the water in a small 2 person hot tub. 5' by 22" water depth in 45 minutes as stated. But I knew that was not true. Probably raise the temperature of the water about 20 degrees in 5-6 hours. Better instructions and securing that switch would have made it a 5 star all the way. The instructions were actually quite detailed. Enough so that reading them is a major hassle. And some key details were left out. No provision for installation deviation. A general repair part is not going to be able to be installed exactly the same every time.

I've owned and worked with a lot of these pumps. I also refer a LOT of people to these who are building heated stock tank pools. They work great to put inline after your pool filter/pump. However, they're not very well built and the trigger to engage the heater is often way out of tolerance and essentially doesn't work. I'd say that 1 out of 3 are defective in some way. Before you install it, see if the the flapper engages properly. Quite often, even full motion of the flapper doesn't engage the heater, and it simply won't turn on, ever. When you see people gluing washers or nickels or whatever to the flapper, it's not because their pool pump is weak, it's because the tolerance is way off when these are built. The other issue with these is that the temperature dial is prone to failure in time. I've had them fail. Since I use a temperature controller, I can often bypass the built in temp dial. But this is not suggested, as it will void the warranty. But the temp dial is garbage anyways. There is no way to set it reliably at all, if you're trying to hold a hot tub tempt steady. Overall this is a good value, but definitely has some issues.

Work great to heat up a redneck hot tub, Update one and a half months and it quit heating, waiting to hear from seller. Very disappointing, it worked so good to start with. The manufacturer needs to fix the flow switch issues and upgrade the thermostat.

I used this in conjunction with "Key Lander Hot Tub Spa Circulation Pump; 48Frame LX Motor" pump. the inlet and outlet is 3/4 in AND it is just enough water flow to activate the heater. YES. There is a minimum flow and the pump above is what is needed. It is barely enough (going through 3/4 ingress and egress). If the filter get clogged, the heater will NOT turn on. We are using the pump and heater above to replace the all in one unit for the inflatable intex hot tub. It works great with some PVC pipe and fittings and the existing hotub. I use a thermostat (arduino microcontroller) to turn the pump on and off, which in turn turns on the pump when the temperature is too cold, and turns the pump off when it is at the right temperature.

Despite ad spec info listed on Amazon saying that the heater was for pools and hot tub spas (most of which are outdoors), one of the instructions that come with the water heater says "For Indoor Use Only". The headline above the instructions for the product note as a Whirlpool Bathtub Heater, not for pools and hot tub spas. However this statement not only contradicts the use and spec information provided in the ad for the Amazon listing, the Basic Requirements & Troubleshooting instructions provided for the product show illustrations for proper hookup to an outdoor hot tub. The only assumption here is that perhaps the heater could be used for both a whirlpool tub and a hot tub. It is supposed to work on a dedicated 110V electricity line with a 20amp circuit and an GFC outlet (all of which are my setup). It also states that it is suitable for up to 450-500 US gallons (my hot tub capacity is less than 200 gallons). And it should function up to 40 degrees centigrade (104 degrees Fahrenheit). However the heater trips the circuit if setting near the max temperature dial and only reaches barely above average body temperature. It then begins to drop its temperature within a couple days to well below average body temperature, never regaining even its highest temperature and eventually quits heating. In addition, the Reset button for attempting to restore proper heating functioning does not work. It does not press in as instructed and shown in the instructions. Finally, the only option offered for return and replacement provides a lot of room for the manufacturer to claim improper installation AND the only way provided for communicating with the manufacturer is via a line that says, "feel free to contact us by E-mail". However, no email address is provided. Safe to say this was a very disappointing purchase with no apparent way to get a refund or replacement.

You are thinking about this product because you have an old hot tub and the only other heater replacement options are near $1,000. You do need some plumbing and electrical knowledge to install this safely. If you haven't ever installed a light switch or a sink or toilet, then definitely seek some professional help). I read many of the reviews before purchasing this, and that really helped my piping and installation plans to be efficient. It still took me an hour getting parts, and about 90 minutes to install. One of my main recommendations is to avoid barb fittings and clamps. These just aren't intended for permanent solutions where there's high pressure in the pipes. Using couplings and PVC cement (which is just a rub on glue) is easy. I'm also not a fan of people manipulating the pressure safety switch (that's a fire risk). If you don't have a strong enough pump, as described by the vendor, then don't use this. Fittings: forget the hardware and plumbing stores - go to a pool specialty store. I got everything I needed in one stop. The half union threads are specific to pools and spas - you will need to attach a coupling or reducer or elbow to that piece that comes off of the heater before you add pipe. You may need 2-in to 1 1/2-in reducers, those are at these stores. I highly recommend the flexible PVC pipe (it's like $5/ft) - it's very stiff, but it's certainly easier than perfectly planning your pipe installation and lengths and rotations. You can see from my pic I had a rather complicated piping because of the direction this heater needs to be installed (that's my only minor complaint of this product). In the end, this heated my 900 L hot tub to 100 F, from cold, overnight and seems to be holding that temperature pretty steadily.

Had electrician do install today and it's been running for a couple of hours. No noticeable difference in temeperature from the inlet line at 74F to outlet line still 74F or perhaps a 1/2 degree increase. I expected to see increase of at least a couple degrees. Electrical contacts all checked and working fine, just not much heat with the temperature control set at 40. I probably should have purchased a 240V heater with better heating capacity. As of today I have a new report. The little heater raised the water temperature by 6 degrees in 4 hours. Much better than I first reported. It doesn't seem to be returning much heat, however the return line is much different than an inground pool. The return line water mixes with the pool in the water rapidly making it a little difficult to notice an difference. However over time it does the job. I have a solar cover on the pool, with that and the little heater I expect to see a rise of 12 degrees today if my calcs are correct.

First off.... I installed this on a older 1000L hotub. My old analog heater died and I didn't want to spend the 1000+$ to put a modern heater and controller in it. This was the only heater thermostat combo I could find. Installation was easy and straightforward. Instructions where there but basicly useless as the English on them was so broken you could easily tell its from off shore (probably China) My issues. First and foremost is the temp. Leave the temp dial in the same spot and it fluctuates anywhere from 98-106 deg Celsius. Secondly the internal breaker pin trips every couple weeks or so (only in winter when it's working harder as my tub is outside but we'll insulated) I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless the temp does not require to be that specific. If whatever your using it for does not require a specific temp then it's great value but you get what you pay for.
