The Expedition of Cyrus (Oxford World's Classics)

History at its best
This is a readable translation of an exciting adventure that is hard to put down. After finishing Xenophon, I took up Waterfield's translation of Herodotus's Histories, which is also an excellent adventure. I learned a lot from both works.

Great translation.
Great translation. It includes in depth notes as well as a map and and weights and measures.

The writing style is archaic (of course) and not as gripping for a modern reader. Worth reading though for the experience of these men from 2500 years ago.

unmatched
In the genre of adventure books, it is clearly impossible to beat this one. The translation is easy flowing and the notes very helpful.

Get another version
I have no idea why this version has so many good ratings. All of the footnotes are marked with an asterisk instead of a number, making it very inconvenient to see which end notes they refer to. The end notes were very unhelpful and poorly organised. Anabasis itself is a classic and a must read, especially for anyone studying military history. This version however, is junk, find another version, probably Penguin classics is better.Update: I compared this translation with Rex Warner's (penguin classics), and Rex Warner is truly superior. Waterfield misses the entire essence and power of Xenophon's speech which Warner captured beautifully. I will be avoiding Waterfield translations from now on.

Readable translation
I don't read Greek so I can't vouch for every aspect of the translation, but I did find the translation readable in the sense of not using either archaic or trendy, colloquial phrases. The footnotes and annotations are quite helpful. I have also been using the annotated Landmark series to read Thucydides and find that this pocket edition is quite a good value to provide the informative footnotes and annotations.

Waterfield's translation keeps this classic fresh and readable
The Robin Waterfield translation is readable, and the story is exciting. The notes are helpful. I learned something about soldiering in the Hellenistic world, and I was entertained at the same time.

For fans of real history and bravery
This account of the march of an unsupported army of ancient Greeks through hundreds of miles of enemy territory to get home to Greece again is a real tale of heroism from our past. That the story survived to the modern day is an indication that it was valued, saved, copied and re-copied by hand over the centuries by those who saw it for what it was -- an inspiration for those facing trials and tribulations that seem insurmountable.
