Originally released in 2003, Mambo Sinuendo, the acclaimed album from Ry Cooder and former Buena Vista Social Club member Manuel Galbán, has been out of print on vinyl since its original release. The double album has been remastered and the double LP comes in a gatefold with an etching on the D side. The music of Mambo Sinuendo captures a Cuban style of music made popular by Galbán, a guitar based uplifting mixture of jazz and pop. The music has an almost retro feel recalling the "lounge" artists of the 50s and 60s with a very distinct Cuban flair and Ry Cooder's unmistakable guitar playing.

A tad loungy
This beautifully pressed and beautifully packaged double-disc set (with music on three sides) sounds great and is well worth owning. That being said, the musicians are having a laid back jam so there’s a minimum of dynamic or memorable passages. But for chill, atmospheric listening it’s perfect.

Salcito, Twangy Latino, Me gusto mucho
I waited a long time to write this review because from the first listen to this album till now I am compelled to compare this music to one of my favorite guitar slingers and every time I listen I can see Mr Brown twanging away at these tunes. I am Speaking of Junior Brown. The guitar work in this album is innovative and highly inventive, if not darn right outlandisly clever. Muted plucks to add to a percussive effect, ala Junior Brown and even strums on the strings above the fretboard, then bending their strange twinkle using a wammy bar. Manuel and Ry share an understanding of just how to break free of the pink stuccoed walls of this genre of music and with a bit of inventiveness and perhaps painful twisting have launched a great big pink flamingo pheonix from the ashes of salsa/merengue. This is one great piece of music, from a blues guitar appreciator's point of view, and one that will keep you guessing "just how did they do that?" I hope Junior has given this one an ear. Good Job Ry and Manuel!!

Absolutely Outstanding
So glad to have this wonderful release on vinyl. Hard to describe the musicality of Mr Cooder and Galban...suffice it to say that this has been, and will remain a staple for every summer cocktail party I ever host.

Electric Havana
If you were to be transported back to 1950s Cuba, you might find music like this coming from the hottest night clubs. The big difference, of course, is that electric instruments were not nearly as prevalent in those days. What is presented here is some of the wonderful Latin rhythms and melodies reminiscent of pre-Castro Cuba, using Fender guitars and a hot, young percussion section. The feel of the album is that of an intimate night club, and you are a guest at the table, witnessing the best musicians in Havana playing dinner and dance tunes in a live setting. Beautiful music and two of the best-sounding Telecasters. You can almost smell the cigars!

Not my favorite Ry Cooder record
I have several Ry Cooder records. I like all of them, some more than others, and this is not one of my favorites. As usual for a Ry Cooder record, the musicianship is great but the concept doesn't work too well for me. There is less variety on this record than some of Cooder's other records. The music is very stylized and I find that a whole record of this music is a bit much. This record is mostly instrumental (the limited vocals are in Spanish) and I think that contributes to the sameness of the music. It is pleasant background music, but a little dull.

perfect
stellar meeting of two masterful guitarists...somewhere between surf gutiar and latin. Galban's lines are so slick and tasteful, the kind of playing only an older player will offer.

Good music. Poor value.
Ry Cooder is a wonderful guitarist and this collaboration with Cuban musicians is special. Sadly there is only ~51 minutes of playing time on this double album. It's promoted a a 2 record set, but side 4 is entirely blank. I never would have paid over $27 knowing that.

Contender for the Best Sound Since the Dawn of Creation
A good contender for the best sound since the dawn of creation, Ry Cooder revisits Cuba for a second time (after Buena Vista Social Club) to pair up with Manuel Galban to re-imagine, re-engineer and re-record classic 50s Cuban vibes, which at the time they were originally recorded were considered modern and futuristic (think of something like "Sleep Walk" by Santo & Johnny). This is the second copy of this album I have purchased from Amazon, this time for number one son, who loves it. Winner of "best pop instrumental" at the 46th Grammys, this album is so laid back its body language has subtitles. It's a bit like meditation, it definitely gets you in the zone. Thank God he never joined the Stones, this guy has a unique musical voice and is a legend. You may recognize the writing of Perez Prado, or you may notice the old classic of "once I had a secret love", but the thing that will overwhelm you is the stunning, mindblowingly brilliant musicianship and the amazing complex contra-rhythms of Cuba. Boy, would I like to win a trip there! Full marks or fail the rest of the class, I think this is Ry Cooder's greatest acheivement, his biggest contribution to World Culture and one of my top ten albums of all time, it might even make it to the desert island with me, simply awesome.

So cool, works in every cirection
I love this album so much. I have been a fan of Ry Coddr's collaborations; they are all great but this one gets to a whole new level. It somehow combines a strong retro, 50s feel with very clever production. Seedy bar, meets lounge smooth, meets effortless virtuosity. This album has its cake and eats it too. It's evocative without a shred of pretention.
