Empire Comfort Systems Black Adjustable Fireplace Hood Adjust from 28" to 48"

Loved that this slid easily to fit our fireplace opening and matched the color too. We were able to fit it over our surround so it was super easy to install. We had spent a significant amount of money on a gas insert that was bubbling the paint on our wood mantel despite the mantel being well above the insert. The vendor refused to help and had no suggestions to fix the problem so we could use our fireplace. I saw one of these shields at a hotel and was happy to find one here. The price seems very reasonable for the benefit and it came very quickly. We are now able to enjoy our fireplace insert without damage to the mantel.

Fairly easy to install and blends into the fireplace box. Seems like it will block the heat from rising to the mantel where it was discoloring the white painted finish.

I was pleasantly surprised that i could hook the hood directly over my fireplace shield which already fits into the existing studs on my wall. Which means, no drilling, no screws, easy installation! the shield holds up the heat very well, because about 2 inches above the hood is where my soundbar is mounted. After running the fireplace for about 30 minutes, i could feel the hood was very hot, but the bottom of the soundbar remained a comfortable warm. Very happy with the surprisingly custom setup, so giving this product a perfect review.

This is a sturdy hood that works well. The installation for my fireplace was different from the options offered in the instructions. My fireplace has a solid piece of marble above the fireplace that meets at a flat metal vent of the fireplace itself. So I had to install the vent differently. It worked well and is solid. The joints for the expanding pieces on each side are not very noticeable so it looks good.

I really love these hoods. The company that installed my stone "look" mantle and surround would not guarantee them without a hood. The hood looks great. I ordered one for both sides of my see-thru woodburning fireplace and they really keep the surround cool. The other side of my fireplace has a tv above it and the smoke no longer goes up to it. The only problem I had was trying to find the right wrench, or any tool to get into the small opening to attach the screws. I'll tell you no lie, I was about ready to throw them into the fire. But, once I figured out how to make my adjustable wrench get into the opening it went pretty quickly with the 2nd hood. I wish the company would send a small wrench with each set, nothing big, I have received things before that had a disposable type wrench included. It took me approximately 45 min to install the 1st hood and 30 minutes for the second. But I have to say, SUCCESS looks so good.

Until intstalling my fireplace mantle was far too hot and the wood surround was cracking. With the hood installation, the heat is dispersed and absorbed by the hood., so the het is no longer a problem.

For $89.95 I would EXPECT this would be finished on both sides..... I ordered this one (the more expensive of two choices) thinking it would be better quality. On the right side panel, there's a spot that appears to be rubbed off and the black paint spray isn't even completely covering the area in that side. Aside from the rust and the rubbed off part, it seems well made. Just really not happy that it came in with rust on it. It appeared to be new but now I'm not sure.

Not much to say about this. It's fairly heavy-gauge metal with two different mounting options. I already had a steel frame that I could screw this to, so it only took me a few minutes to drill four holes for the black sheet metal screws that come with it. There's a slightly more complex method for mounting it directly to a masonry surface, if you need to. In either case, it's not going to be a big project. One reason I purchased this particular unit was that it has a center section and two sliding sections that allow you to adjust it so it is symmetrical. My gas log guy only had hoods with a single sliding section, so they looked sort of lopsided. Of course, the whole reason I had to get this was that the gas log manufacturer requires at least a 4" hood (in the case of my fireplace and mantel) to deflect the heat. The city inspector (required here) had no problem with this hood or the method of installation. My local gas company would have charged me $150 to put in a similar hood.
