I LOVE IT! I've been using two of these Thermo 250's on my freshwater 55 gal, for 3 weeks+ now. The Thermo 250 cost a lil more than most canister filters, but has 2 great features that make it worth the extra price. 1: It comes with a built in heater which is great, because that's less clutter in your aquarium. 2: It has a pre-filter on the intake that can be pulled out and cleaned separately, so you don't have to always clean the whole canister, and you can keep that good bacteria growing in the main filter trays. 3: It comes with 4 trays to add media too. 4: It's super quiet, my 60 gal rated air pump is louder then both of my 250Ts combined, and the air pump really quiet. I have not had to do any maintenance in my first month of running and the water flow is still very strong in my heavily fish stocked/planted aquarium. I have to be honest though; I'm only using the coarse circular intake filter pads that came with it, because I upgraded just about everything else. I also added jardli glass water intake and glass water outtake for that kool less clutter look. This is because I did some serious research on the net and good ol youtube. After a long search on all types of aquarium filters ie.. hang on back, canister, sponge, under gravel and sup, I came across this Thermo 250 Canister from Oase. Now just about all if not every youtube video on it was from a none english speaking country. Then I seen this random video that said "pimpmyfilter". I clicked on it and some British guy named the "pondguru" was giving a demonstration on how to make the Thermo 600 model more efficient. After watching that video I was completely hooked/sold on his way of making the Thermo Canister filter more efficient. I didn't do the drilling though, cause it doesn't seem to be needed, the water flow is still very strong. With that being said I can't give an honest opinion on how good the filter media is that came with it like the meduim and fine pads and the ceramic balls. Because, I pimped out both of my Thermo 250s from start. I am using the original black fine pads for the prefilter, because they work the best for trapping muck and not letting it through to the main filter. No matter what type of filter you get whether it's this one or another model or brand, I highly highly recommend that you go on YouTube and type "pimpmy(filter name here)filter" ie pimpmyoasethermofilter, pimpmyfluvalfilter, pimpmywhateverfilter. I promise you that that will be the most helpful thing you ever did when it comes to searching for and aquarium filter. No-one on the internet that I've seen is doing anything remotely close to what that guy does to aquarium fliters. He didn't pay me or ask me to promote his channel. He'll probably never know that I'm promoting his work. I'm just giving him mad props because he deserves it. I took a chance as these didn't have a lot of reviews or videos online. I am using this in a mixed reef tank and it could very well be the perfect canister for this situation. To start it is silent!. When I first turned it on there was a slight water trickle noise which completely went away after a few hours. I suspect it was still purging some air pockets during this time. But now it is completely silent - no hum, no water noise, nothing. The only way I know its running is to look at the return line and see the water moving out into the tank. The pre-filter area is awesome. Oase offers 30ppi, 45ppi, 60ppi and 45ppi carbon sponges for the pre-filter. Mine came with the 45ppi carbon sponges. I have changed these out to the finer 60ppi sponges which are equivalent to approx 250 micron filters. With the 60ppi sponges I rinse them thoroughly every week but the process of doing so is so simple and quick. The benefit is my water gets a polished look and the canister stays clean so I dont have to open and clean it very often. I run purigen in the canister so I do have to open it once a month or so to replace and when I do the inside is virtually detritus free. The flow is superb. Inside the canister I have 1/2L of Seachem matrix in the bottom basket, 1/2L of Seachem matrix in the next basket, an empty third basket, and 100ml of purigen in the top. I let the prefilter area handle all my mechanical filtration and try not to cram too much media in the filter to slow it down. With this setup I am pushing 208 gph up 32" to my tank. (measured via an inline digital meter). I connected the heater to my JBJ controller for the first week to verify the accuracy of temperature and it was spot on. It maintains my 48 Gallon tank at a consistent 79 degrees.

I've been using the Biomaster Thermo 250 on my 22 gallon long for 3 months. The two features I like the most are the pre-filter access and the stacking trays for various filtration media. The integrated heater is an awesome idea, but the thermostat doesn't match the temperature of the water that comes out. The difference is between 1-3 degrees F. This is most noticeable during the winter months when ambient room temperatures may be lower than the thermostat setting. I recommend monitoring your water temperature with a independent thermometer and adjust the heater accordingly. This filter is also quiet. For the first 2.5 months of ownership, it was nearly silent. Recently it started a "buzzing" sound so I tried a different type of pre-filter sponges sold by Oase, but the sound continued. I disassembled the impeller and cleaned it out which stopped the noise. I would still recommend the Thermo version of the Biomaster series to anyone. Four-stars because of the impeller noise issue after 2.5 months. I will update the rating if the noise issue doesn't come back.

I've had this for a few months now for my first tank. It was very easy to set up! Even easier to clean! You cannot hear it at all. It's completely silent. I didn't beef up any of the filters or media like I seen some people suggest. It works perfectly! No spikes in nitrite or nitrates. Everything is settled in my tank now and I'm growing purple coraline algae. I hope it runs for years to come. I think I will buy a replacement heater just in case I ever have mine go out. I'm curious how long everything will last long term. I'll try to update this review if I ever have to replace anything. I would definitely buy another one if this one last me for years!

Had this barely over a year and already looking to replace. I’ve had more issues with leaking with this thing than anything else I’ve ever owned that’s aquarium related and I’ve been in this hobby for 15+ years. The hose that comes with this thing is too stiff and literally pops off during maintenance - spraying water. I used a hair dryer to heat the hose and had to work its way on my inflow/outflow and I mean it was on there good. I could not pull it off. A few months later it’s like the hose stretched because it literally fell off during maintenance. It’s detached from the canister itself and the inflow/outflow. I contacted Oase support about it and they asked for photos and more details and then I heard nothing else from them. It has known issues with the seal and you have to be sure to apply silicone grease at every filter change/clean. The prefilter is nice but can also be a mess if you don’t detach the whole canister and put it in a bucket - and like what’s the point of a convenient prefilter if that’s the case? My last filter was a fluval that lasted 10 years until the seal started to wear out and I never put silicone on it. I’m already looking at going back because the constant anxiety of worrying about leaks with this thing is not worth it. Oh also! Do yourself and favor and look up replacement media. I had to order directly from Oase in a bundle because it was the only thing available and it was not cheap. I’m sure there’s alternatives but replacement media should be readily available.

I bought this to replace a Rena Filstar XP2 that kept leaking and it got to the point where I could no longer trust it, especially if I was going to be gone for a few days. That got me looking for a new filter. I came across the Oase Biomasters from several Youtube videos, and they seemed fairly popular in Europe, but new in the US. I picked this filter because of the ease of cleaning the pre-filter and the in-filter heater. Removing the heater from the tank makes the back of the tank nice and tidy. I've read a couple of instances where the heater failed and you have to replace it with an Oase heater, but I haven't had any problems with mine. This filter comes with a lot of sponge, and some plastic bio media. I shelved all that except for the filter floss, and loaded my baskets with the bio-media (Seachem Matrix) that was in my other filter. So far, it keeps the tank crystal clear, and a steady 76*F. I'm really happy with this filter.

The filter itself works great and produces ample current (for a 21 gallon tank). The only issue is the heater. I would recommend that you first install the heater in the tank itself and use the heater plug in the filter to cover the hole. Run the heater (as well as the filter) and make sure it is able to sustain the temperature you set it to for a 24-hour period. If it is not keeping an accurate temperature, you will need to recalibrate it using the tool attached to the suction cup mount. Break off the calibration tool and use it to turn the unit toward the (very hard to see) plus or minus sign on the blue dial while holding the rest of the unit in place. In my case, the heater was off by six degrees and need three clicks to the right to get the unit to start heating the water. Once the heater is calibrated, you can put it in the filter but be prepared for a splash fest. Make sure the unit is turned off and the inflow/outflow tab is moved to the off position. Use a turkey baster to remove extra water from the heater tube well before you try to put the heater back into the filter. Good luck.

Really good external canister filter. I set this up for my 40 gal planted aquarium. I use two of the trays for bio medium, one for sponge and the last one with purigen. My water is crystal clear. Filter is very quiet. I am going to leave the main filter running for a few months but clean the pre filter every month as the pre filter can be easily taken out without dismantling the whole filter. The built in heater is very accurate. Now my tank has lots of room for aquascaping as before I had a Fluval submersible filter plus a heater. At first I thought I can save some money and get Oase without the heater but I heard fish can get burns bumping into the heater, I decided to get the thermal version and have not regretted it. I watched a lot of videos on different canister filters before buying this. All of Green Aqua's aquariums have this filter. Well built filter. Some day I might change the output to a Lily pipe but for now I use the included accessory to get surface agitation.

Great product! It was doing as others claimed they do by making a air gurgling noise and after drilling extra holes into the intake pre filter it stopped. Nice having heating and filtering all in one, making your aqua scape free of extra gear in the view. Cleaning is a breeze with only needing to clean pre filter leaving the media to be tended to much less. Added my in line co2 system without any problems.

I like this filter this is second one I bought but. The. Heater. Was not inculdedx. . Which is a problem.

I had high hopes for this filter based on Oase’s reputation, but unfortunately, my experience has been very disappointing. After 8 weeks of starting to use the filter it developed a persistent vibration that caused excessive noise. I contacted Oase support. . They were responsive and sent several replacement parts, but the issue was never resolved despite extensive troubleshooting, including: Replacing components as provided by Oase Insulating the cabinet to minimize vibration transfer Switching to silicone tubing to dampen line resonance Repositioning the filter and hoses to reduce mechanical contact Ensuring all mounting points and surfaces were level and stable Despite all of this, the vibration persists, making the filter unsuitable for a quiet environment like a living room or office.
