Plant-Based Diet Benefits You Should Not Ignore “If every patient in every doctor's office read this book, it would revolutionize the health of America.” ― Neal Barnard, MD , president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine #1 Bestseller in Agriculture & Food Policy, Vegetables, Special Diet, Vegan & Vegetarian, Healthy Living, Personal Health, and Diets & Weight Loss A book from the over-one-million-copies-sold author who made popular the connections between diet, physical health, animal cruelty, and environmentalism. A revolution in food-politics. When John Robbins released an early version of this book in 1987, he took the first steps in the food revolution. His insight into the harm caused by America’s eating habits was a wake-up call for many. Making conscious food choices. It is obvious to us that what we eat affects our bodies, but what we may not realize is that what we eat also affects our world. In fact, most of the foods that are bad for us (think genetically modified products) also negatively impact our environment. By approaching our eating habits with intentionality, we benefit our own health and that of the world we live in. Plant-based diet benefits. Arguments for a plant-based diet are compelling and backed by over 20 years of work by Robbins focused on the subject of conscious eating. Exposing the dangers in our factory farming system, Robbins makes a definitive case for solely plant-based eating. This timely read on healthy eating will enlighten those curious about plant-based diets and fortify the mindsets of the already converted. Read The Food Revolution and discover: The negative effects of your current eating habits A powerful case for plant-based eating Wisdom from one of the most frequently cited books of the food-politics revolution If you have read books such as We are the Weather, How Not to Die, 31-Day Food Revolution , or Fast Food Genocide , then The Food Revolution is a must read! Review: THE FOOD REVOLUTION is another marvelous book by John Robbins - The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World by John Robbins While it was not the only influence, it is accurate to say that I became a vegan over two decades ago after reading John Robbins' Diet for a New America in 1988. I have pointed to him and the book ever since as shining examples of organic, whole foods with the absence of animal or dairy products. As most everybody knows, Mr. Robbins was the heir of the Baskin-Robins chain, set up for life at the top, where he was to become one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. The only problem was that Mr. Robbins looked into how the dairy and meat products in modern times are produced. He started researching studies, comparing scientific reality with the marketing malarkey of the meat and dairy industry. He next walked away from the family business, became a vegan, stepped down from taking over before the financial empire before the day even arrived. There are not many people in this or any lifetime who give up fortune to pursue a life of enlightenment instead. In Diet for a New America, Mr. Robbins did not draw attention to what he gave up or the hardships that he and his wife encountered as a result. He merely pointed out how cruel and inhumane modern farming and livestock is, pointed out the fabrications of the meat and dairy industry, advocating a plant-based diet as an alternative. It was powerful, factual and moving. In response to Diet for a New America, thousands of us in the United States and around the world became vegans, many of us remaining so the decades since. Mr. Robbins released Diet for a New America in 1987. He has continued to research, write and provide a voice for reason and humanity in our eating habits. In The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Save Your life and Our World, Mr. Robbins continues to make a strong and convincing argument for a plant-based diet. He points out the mistruths and outright lies of the meat and dairy industry. He offers study after study demonstrating that modern factory farming is polluting the water and the air, and is the leading cause of methane. He argues, again convincingly, that the best and quickest way to combat Climatic Change would be for everybody to become a vegan. He points out the harm done humans and the eco system as a result of animals kept in inhumane & disease inviting factory environments, fed a diet not fit for an animal and given mega antibiotics to keep them alive for the final slaughter. He points out the filthy conditions of the slaughter houses and the various foodborne deceases that invade our food system on a daily basis, some taking up to seven weeks after eaten for sever health issues to become noticeable, making it virtually impossible to track the source. Mr. Robbins makes point after point about what is wrong with factory farming, using the medical profession and scientists to make his case, leaning on study after study that proves his various hypothesizes concerning the cruelty of livestock, the health hazards it produces, the inevitable health risks to eating the unhealthy meat and dairy, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and a host of heart related diseases, including cardiac arrest and death. The book offers strong evidence that the meat, dairy, white flour, corn syrup and processed sugar habits of modern humans is the root of many of the worst modern health problems. Mr. Robbins also takes on the modern farming practices of vegetables, especially pointing out the dangers of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Who should read this book? Every human being in the world who can read, and anybody who cannot read should have somebody read it to them who can read. If you want to eat healthier, understand the dangers of our food system and do something about Climatic Change, read this book. It should be on the immediate reading list of anybody who has not already read it. John Robbins is one of the heroes of today's world. He will never call himself that, and seems too humble a person to ever view himself in that light, but it truly is people such as him who are making the world better, not the athletes, entertainers and celebrities that are generally viewed as the heroes of our society. He is likely the closest we have in our generation to a Buddha, somebody on the verge of becoming king, to walk away from it, to go into the woods, to think, to think some more, to accept the world around him in the most pure and natural form possible. This is a great book that every vegan, progressive, environmentalist, humanist, animal rights activist, health advocate, intelligent, decent, informed and positive person can learn something and embrace. Thank you, John Robbins, for helping so many of us to see the light, or to see it better. MADAM PRESIDENT (American Myth Series) Review: Change your life! - We should all be mad. We’ve been lied to for the sake of corporate profits. They don’t want us to realize that there is one thing we can do that will give us a better quality of life. John Robbin’s (of Baskin & Robbins) book is very well researched. How does your diet affect your health and the planet? What’s the truth about factory farms and GMO foods? Do you recycle? Do you love animals? You can help the planet, animals and yourself at the same time. We can choose not to support the industries that pretend to have our best interests at heart and make billions off us. We can choose organic vegan foods. Yes, it may be more expensive in the short run, but organic foods are usually more nutrient dense. And in the long run, we will have a better quality of life, save $ in medical bills, and be living by our conscience. We won’t be ingesting chemicals and hormones and who knows what in genetically modified foods. They fought labeling and won because they don’t want us to know what’s in our food, and they don’t know the long term effects. We will be doing the one thing that impacts our health, our fellow animals, and our environment more than any other single thing we can do. We will not support cutting down rain forests or the horrendous treatment of animals on factory farms or the destruction of our own health and the environment. I never thought I could go vegan. But I did over 20 years ago, and it’s the best decision I ever made. I love to eat and now I do so with a clear conscience. I evolved my diet slowly, and I feel better and get sick less often. You can cut down on animal foods, and if you do eat them, eat organic meat and dairy. Care about what you put in your body and how animals are treated. There are so many wonderful meat alternatives and nut cheeses. Try them. Change your life. You’ll feel so much better!

So much I never knew...
I know it sounds corny, but it is a life-changing book. I learned so much about what we eat and where our food comes from that I felt like I'd been living with my head in the sand for the past 30 years. I appreciated all of the references, and actually kept a 2nd bookmark at the back of the book because of the number of times I said to myself "no way!" and then looked for the reference to back up what he was saying. In every chapter there was at least one thing that absolutely stunned me and made my jaw hit the ground. It was a fascinating read, and I finished it in only a few days. The biggest thing I appreciated about the book is how comprehensive it is. I like that he discussed nutritional aspects, compassion for animals, benefits for the environment, etc. I initially became interested in vegetarianism out of compassion for animals, and wound up learning all of the other great reasons to go veg too. I kept raving about the book so much that my meat-eating husband has been reading it too, and actually said the other day, "You know....I could totally see myself becoming a vegetarian." Enough said!! Update (10/10/08): Both my husband and I have been vegetarian now for 18 months and have never looked back!

The Food Bible
This is the most important book about food to date. That said, it is not a detailed dietary plan. It is an environmental manifesto, a factory farm expose, and the most up-to-date and scientifically sound presentation of: 1) the health benefits of a plant-based diet; 2) the pitfalls of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food and the biotech industry in general; 3) the underlying dietary and environmental causes of cancer; 4) the threat of food-borne illness and how it can be avoided; 5) the most humane solution to world hunger; 6) and the billions of dollars worth of PR lies the public is fed to counter the truth that might set us free. This book absolutely blew me away. Critically acclaimed author John Robbins earns full marks in terms of his passion to social justice, his unbridled commitment to quality scientific evidence, and highly-readable, compassionate, and straight-forward writing style. In every sense of the term, he has earned the title of "food prophet". For those of you who read and loved "The Food Revolution" I also recommend Frances Lappe's "Hope's Edge" and Erik Marcus's "Vegan" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Polen. Imperative reading. j.w.k.

Very informative book
I am a parttime vegetarian. I almost never eat read meat. Sometimes i eat chicken and i do enjoy non-farm fish. I have read many diet books, mostly to get information on what is good or bad for your health. I also almost always choose organic if it is available. It has not been easy though. There are respectable authors and jounalists that will tell you fat and meat are good for you because you wont get fat and gain weight since protein and fat does not result in insulin production. another argument that meat is not bad for you is humans are carnivores and our body is designed to eat mean thru the evolution (dr Atkins, Gary Taubes...). On the opposite side you also have specialists with respectable credentials that argue meat is the source of all kinds of diseases (e.g. the china study that is a very informative and good read). I have done my own experiments and can tell you that living off vegetarian diet adds huge amount of vitality to your body. You have lot more energy and you lose weight. So I know vegetarian diet is good for you. What i did not know or maybe did not pay attention to so much was the farm factory conditions animals were living under, how much they polute the environment and how companies like monsanto is doing everything they can, and unfortunately with some success, to stop labelling of GMO food so consumers have no way of knowing what is genetically altered food and what is not. That was a huge shock for me.

A transformative book
Having been suspect of vegetarians and vegans due to associations with "superstitious spirituality", I have been convinced in the last two months by the compelling statistics presented primarily in this book (and a couple of others) that a vegan diet is the easiest path to maintaining health. I haven't eaten red meat for years thinking that chicken, fish, milk, and eggs were healthier choices. From my associations, I think this assumption is widely held, although fallacious. I do work in the health care field and have always been concerned with avoiding illness. My previous attitude regarding vegans is now being foisted upon me by others who associate this lifestyle as being essentially feminine, although I do know they can be persuaded (maybe) if they do read this book. The arguments regarding health, environmental concerns, and humanitarian practices, each one standing alone are enough to convince me that this reversal in my ingrained habits is necessary for continued health and peace of mind. Now, do I give my eggs from my chickens to my friends or my enemies? I don't really have the heart to dispatch them at this time.

Mixing genes from humans with fish!!!
What has happened to the USA? As a none U.S. citizen I can't understand how the Government there has became so influenced by big business. I know it happens in all countries but you guys are the kings. How a compny like Monsanto can push through it's ideas of what it classes as safe food is beyond belief. The history of Monsanto is filled with pollution, death, cancer, birth defects, chemicals, war and now they're running the farms in the USA and around the world. They have tried to push there brand of GM foods into Europe but under strict European law have found it difficult. This book explains all the above and a whole lot more. The first half talks about the benefits of a vegetarian diet, which might not suit everyone but nevertheless the info is first rate. The author guides you through the world of the vegetarian and informs us where you can obtain certain vitamins from certain beans, fruit, veg and nuts etc. The first half also looks at farming techniques today, and if your a meat eater you need to read this, it's horrific. What I found interesting was the contrast in European farming compared to the USA. Some farming practices in the USA are classed as illegal in Europe. It really makes you think that without Europe (not often enough may I add) standing up to the USA and highlighting some issues, in this case GM crops and animals, the whole world would be flooded with them. The second part of the book, amongst other things, throws some light of why the U.S. Government is so easily led with GM foods. There is basically a revolving door between government agencies and the biotech industry all the way back to Rayguns era right up to the Bush one. This book made me think more about food and since reading I've researched more about a veg diet, there are hundreds of recipe books, buy one and have a go. I`m not saying stop eating meat that's your choice but at least try some veg meals. There is a whole big world of tasty veg food out there. One recipe I tried was sliced potatoes, cherry tomatoes, some onion, grated goats chees, herbs and some spices, in a baking try topped with olive oil, in the oven for 30/40 mins and bang, amazing!!! Can't belive I stuck a recipe on here. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK AND EAT FOOD FOREVER.

Food for thought
The Food Revolution is a very compelling read. Nutrition is a science that not too many people have a grasp of. I appreciate what John Robbins believes in and what's worked for him but, as a society, our views are skewed and we've been manipulated for decades to eat a certain way and to avoid certain macronutrients to achieve certain results and it's gotten out of hand. We are more "health" conscious than ever yet cancer rates and obesity are at all time highs. This book is interesting but I wouldn't necessarily base my lifestyle on it.

I enjoyed this book very much
I enjoyed this book very much. Easy to read and examined the issues of a vegetarian/vegan diet in a non preachy way. I found that his approach of you don't have to stop eating meat, just eat less of it approach will help many pro meat eater (vegans are nuts) understand why there is a great need to stop consuming so much animal protein. Very informative and a good place to start for people who are trying to understand why there is a great push from great number of scientists and animal rights activists to eat less meat and more plants

life changing book
Amazing book that opens up your eyes to the reality of this messed up world. i have cried 3 times so far reading it. If i ever go to the usa i will never touch a morsel of meat and possibly try to be as vegan as i could manage...i dont want to be a blind supporter of this crap society any more. i am starting on the path to become vegetarian now, we'll see how that goes. Vegan is best though. Most people just dont wanna know whats really happening, ignorance is bliss an all that b*****ks. I will pay my teenage daughter to read this book... Another brilliant book is 'the china study'. i have bought many copies to give to people i care about. its my bible! check the reviews! :)

More humane
is one of the book which my friend recommended and I am happy to get it delivered by Amazon It speaks out its own why we are having more illness these days which can be reduced drastically by changing the food we eat.I highly recommend this book because it again and again reminds why we should avoid American diet and just stick to the diet which our ancestors used to tell us[Vegan Diet]
