NO MORE SOUNDBARS
OK - so my brother gave me a set of Edifier Bookshelf speakers. Fantastic! They sound great. But.... they don't have a digital input. Only RCA. So... I was using an RCA splitter from the TV which did work. So here comes this lil' thing. This simple DAC solves all my problems. I plugged in the Digital cable on one side, RCA on the other (oh and the USB into the TV) and now I have great sound. Hmm only issue is now I need to use the remote that came with the speakers to adjust the volume instead of the TV. This is a great little simple DAC though and I'm glad I found it from ZReviews (Thanks Zeos) to solve the issue I had. And no more Soundbars when you can do this and get way better looking and sounding setup for your TV.

Does the job!
This should be built into decent AV receivers, but they aren't. My receiver only passes analog signals out to the analog outputs. That was fine when I played CDs or music from my Dish network box, as both of these have both digital and analog outputs. But now, I am playing music from a HDMI source. I have not yet found an AV receiver that will pass HDMI audio out to analog outputs. The reason I need analog is because I have 2 slim analog amps to power 2 sets of outdoor speakers. This way I can control the volume of the patio speakers independently from the yard rock speakers. This tiny box let's me now play streaming music outside! I hooked it up to the optical output on my 7 year old receiver, and connected the RCA outputs from this box to the inputs on my amps. Then, in double checked the documentation to see how powerful of a USB power supply I needed. It didn't say anywhere! I had a 500ma, a 750ma, and a 1 amp. I figured I'd better be on the safe side and use the 1 amp one that came with my first smartphone! As for the sound, well, I can't tell any difference in the sound quality of what the digital signal is playing in my living room compared to what my Yamaha outdoor patio speakers are playing going through this and the inexpensive analog amps. There is a slight delay, although, I believe the delay was always present when using all analog connections in the past, and not caused by this FiiO box. I hope this little FiiO box lasts a long time, as it is doing a great job! Great purchase. Oh, the build quality send very good too!

Caveat if you intend to use both RCA and 3.5mm output
The DAC does its job for either RCA or 3.5mm, sounds clean. However, if you plan on using both the RCA and 3.5mm output to two different devices there will be noticeable distortion on the 3.5mm. Currently I am outputting RCA to a SMSL SA300 stereo amplifier and the 3.5mm to a JDS Atom headphone amp. While the RCA output is connected to the SMSL (even if the amp is powered off) the 3.5mm signal to the headphone amp becomes significantly distorted. As soon as I unplug the RCA from the DAC the issue goes away. Honestly for 20$ you get what you pay for. And if you're just using it as a single output DAC to replace computer onboard audio then it is 100% worth the value. Unfortunate the both outputs aren't usable simultaneously, looks like I'll be springing for a more expensive unit.

I'm a bit stunned with this little Fiio DAC - a bit unbelievable for me (in a good way)...
Wow - now where do I even begin with this one? Received this little FiiO D03K DAC the other day. I got it to use with my video system on the first floor. I previously was using a no-name small DAC (about the same size as this FiiO D03K) and although it did the trick for what I wanted, I knew there had to be something better out there at the same size and price level. Because I have expensive and better DACs that I use with my reference sound system located on the 2nd floor, I happened to see this FiiO D03K DAC on Amazon. I know the FiiO name well, as I have happen to have one of their top-of-the-line reference quality DAC's, so my interest was piqued and I ordered one. When it arrived I immediately connected it (I ordered the version that came without a power cord because I have tons of power supplies on hand). From the moment I began testing it out by watching movies with Hi Def content, I was stunned at how good it sounded. Then just for sh_t's and giggles, I took it upstairs and connected it to my audiophile reference audio system, and it was there that I realized this little thing punches far, far above its weight. All of a sudden I was getting reference quality sound - far better than one would expect of a small DAC costing less than $20. No way, I thought - but yes WAY!!! So folks, if you are short on cash, or if you need a small DAC that punches far, far above its weight, don't hesitate to get this FiiO D03K. I give it my highest recommendation based on it's ridiculously inexpensive price vs it's high audio performance capabilities. 5 stars was an easy given.

Good for backup pc audio
Worked great when my case's front panel audio stopped working except for a bit of static when the pc was off but that could just be the motherboard's spdif port.

A high quality DAC for connecting a modern TV to an older speaker system
I was in search of a high quality affordable DAC to connect my new 4K HDTV to my 2.1 stereo receiver that doesn’t have any optical inputs. I lost the analog 3.5mm line out that my old TV had. I’ve tried other DACs suggested on Amazon but my issues were either the volume output was too low (have to turn up my receiver more for regular listening) or the sound quality was lacking (treble not as clear and/or the bass didn’t have any depth). Then I found this and it met my expectations. The difference with the essentials edition to the normal edition is the absence of a USB power block. This DAC does include a short mini USB cable in the box so you’ll just have to use your own USB block. Also, it does not include a RCA analog cable nor optical audio cable. Those you’ll have to supply yourself or buy separately. I brought a separate longer 6ft mini USB cable so it would reach to the power strip where the USB block was plugged into. I don’t recommend powering this DAC through your HDTV’s USB port as it caused a ground loop subtle buzzing noise in my speaker system’s output. Once I used a separate USB charging block the output was nearly noiseless if I didn’t have anything playing on my TV.
