Q: It is near impossible to get the pencil in enough to sharpen it, I have pushed it in with all my strength and it’s shaved a tiny bit of the pencil.

This sharpener should take standard size pencils for sharpening, a double hole sharpener would be required for sharpening jumbo pencils.

Q: How do you open the compartment to empty the shavings?

Just pull the back off from the seam where the sharpener changes colour. It is very stiff the first couple of times and you may need to slide something fine into the seam to help loosen it. Mine is still fairly tight (which stops it leaking) but it does come off much more easily by hand only now I've done it a few times.
