Very impressed so far
I just got this sharpener as a replacement for one I am returning. This one operates very smoothly and has successfully sharpened all but one extremely soft charcoal. There's a lot of metal here and it feels very well constructed. The gear mechanism is all metal and it mounts into a nice metal housing. Another reviewer posted that the Carl Angle 5 sharpeners are not quite as good as this Angle 5 Royal which is made in Japan. I haven't compared the different versions but this one is really nice. Costs a little more but I think it will last for many years.

Wow! What a great pencil sharpener!
Quick and a perfect long, sharp, concave pencil tip each time. Nice! Also good feature to allow for a very sharp tip or slightly blunted tip.

Amazing quality, get this if your in the market for a pencil sharpener!
Amazing quality for a pencil sharpener. This is all metal and doesn't require a clamp or screws to hold it down so therefore you can put it away when its not needed. The pencil holding guide in the front (silver part) applies pressure holding the pencil in place along with pulling the pencil towards the sharpener, awesome design, but have read this has been the norm in Japan for many years!! A stand out feature is that this can select from pencil 2 point shapes, one that is extremely needle like but yet not thin enough to easily break or a more rounded pencil point. The cutter on this chewed through nearly 3 dozen pencils for my son's prep for returning back to school, all the pencils were evenly sharpened every time, compared to the Mitsubishi KH-20 I tried earlier which left an uneven sharpen where one side of the pencils seemed uncut (about 12 pencils). The one downside is that it won't fit the "My First" pencil types where it has the thicker diameter pencils, which wasn't an issue for me since it seems public school here moved right to the normal diameter #2 pencils, skipping the My First pencils. This will definitely last a few lifetimes and is something to pass on to the kids, if your in the market for a pencil sharpener, "Carl Angel 5 Royal" is worth that upgrade from the base model Angel 5 or any other hand crank and even electric sharpeners.

The finish color was misrepresented but the sharpener is still worth keeping.
Missing a star only because the color shown in the ad isn’t close to what I received. What I received is a lipstick magenta color that isn’t close to the attractive red shown. My picture shows a red coffee cup for comparison. The sharpener feels substantial and hardly any effort is used to turn the crank. It’s a quality product that I would recommend. Basic pencils come out exceedingly sharp on the sharp setting and perfect for layouts and other construction uses on the blunter setting.

Maybe too sharp!
This is an outstanding sharpener from Japan. It is of substantial weight and made of steel. The only plastic thing is the shavings bin. It has two setting on the crank. One for 0.05mm & 0.09mm. I use this for my colored pencils of which I have some Caran D'ache luminance which are a slightly bigger pencil and they work with this sharpener. I have Faber Castile Polychomes and some Prismacolors all of which sharpened well. My problem is that they may sharpen a little too well but we will wait and see. I almost wish I had gotten the Carl CS-2000 which has 5 settings for points. Overall I am very very pleased with this sharpener and I expect it to last me a very long time.Edit: this did not come with a clamp for the table. Also it does have rubber grips for the part that holds the pencil so it doesnt leave holes in your pencil.

Hands down, the best manual pencil sharpener I've ever owned
As my kids have grown up, drawing has become a staple activity for them. And while I try and get them quality pencils for these tasks, it's hard to justify the cost of some of the more high-end drawing implements. But so often with the off-the-shelf options, when sharpened with either electric or handheld sharpeners, either the lead tends to break easily while sharpening, or the wood gets chewed up and is less supportive of the lead so it breaks quickly with use.But a number of years ago I did the research and bought one of these Carl Angel sharpeners (the Angel 5), and it changed everything. Even the cheapest of pencils would come out with a sharp and stable point and a smooth taper to support it. And the design of the mechanism prevents it from just chewing down a pencil once it's sharpened like other sharpeners can easily do. My kids have even packed it for trips. It's been such a hit in out household, that I had to buy a second one (this one), and I would easily buy a third if I needed to (though the construction is such that I feel I may never need to replace either of them). If you draw or go through a lot of pencils, this sharpener is a game-changer.

Well worth the money. The best sharpener out there.
I just got this today and tried it immediately. This sharpener is awesome!!!!! It gives the sharpest point I have ever seen! I also like that it was a no brainer to use since instructions are in Japanese. I pulled the metal front out, squeeze the ears on the top, slid the pencil in till it stopped, let go of the ears and turned the crank handle. It sharpened the pencil and then once it was sharp it became easier to turn the handle so it was done. Now I won't over sharpen my pencils and it gives me the sharpest point fast. I love love love this thing LOL!!! It will save you money in the long run as you will not eat up your expensive pencils.

A nice surprise!
Had to wait a while for delivery from overseas. They were very good with communication as there is no 'tracking'. It finally arrived! I do wish there would be some direction in English. It does come with a small pamphlet , with a few small diagrams, but not able to read it. I tested it on old graphite pencils and then watercolor pencils. It did a wonderful job. The next test was on Prisomcolor pencils. It did a nice job of sharpening and was an improvement on the dreaded broken Prismcolor breaking 'leads'. Severl did break (inside the sharpener).I had to figure out how to get the broken tips out. I took out the little draw that catches the shavings , turn it on it's side and tap it. One time I had to use something sharp to get it unstuck. All and all a big improvement of other sharpeners I have. It will be a keeper!

Not sure yet
It works great. I like it, but it is expensive stuff. Actually I can find a more cheaper one which works fine as well. Anyway I will keep this one.
