Q: does this press return back to the up position by itself or with some type of spring?

The hydraulic ram retracts itself when pressure is released.

Q: Would this work well for forging billets of steel like on forged in fire

Not likely. I have it hooked up to a 20g 5hp compressor at 90psi and it's slow. I imagine it's slow speed and building up pressure while touching part would draw heat out of workpiece too quickly to be useful.

Q: Is the ram adjustable horizontally or is it stationary?

Yes - it goes left to Right. I love my press

Q: Picture looks like end of Ram is removable, perhaps threaded or detented, is it? if no, how do you hold a press-pin of smaller diameter than Ram?

Yes, there is a set screw in the ram. I have not removed it though.
