Modern Tech for DC Layout
The Kato Smart Controller allows wireless operation of my model railroad. By itself it controls one track, varying the voltage and polarity of the locomotive for speed and direction. When connected to the Analog Sound Box it fully controls all aspects of the unit allowing for complete wireless layout operation with sound. I am grateful that Kato is supporting model railroaders who have chosen to stay with analogue DC as our preferred method to run our trains. Now I hope Kato will develop a bluetooth unit to control multiple turnouts. Kato has always provided quality products and the Smart Device Controller is awesome.

Mixed feelings on this…
Overall like the concept. The app works well, it connects to the soundbox (still waiting on its arrival) it connects to the track easily…BUT the power output is so low that I spent hours cleaning track, testing all my locomotives…cleaning/lubing a locomotive…all before hooking up my old transformer and realizing that the power output is about half what a typical MRC transformer puts out. There was nothing wrong with the trains or track…it was simply that the unit doesn’t compare to the power output. Not sure what to do. Live with low top speeds or try to figure out is this is a defective unit.

NO CONSTANT LIGHTING
Since the description says PWM output, I thought it would provide the constant lighting like the power pack standard sx does, but it does not. I measured the AC voltage out of the power pack sx and it puts out about 1.6 VAC when the control is set for about 3.5 VDC. The smart controller only outputs about .7 VAC at the same DC output. The passenger car lights do not come on at this voltage level. I have to run the train at high DC voltage, which makes for unrealistic speed for N-gauge steam. The wireless (BT) works great otherwise.

Great Controller
This controller is a great idea. Allows for remote walk around train control without expensive DCC
