Pilot MR Animal Collection Fountain Pen, Ball Point Pen & Mechanical Pencil Set in Gift Box, Matte Black Barrels with Crocodile Accent (91243)

I have used Pilot pens on and off from my teenage years. Still own one that I've had for decades. This collection has a good quality fountain pen, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil. For the price, better than lot more expensive ones out there in the market, in quality and functionality.

This is a great combo set. Everything works well, and is fun to write with. I plan on getting a few as I lose or break them.

[This review is edited to reflect my revised impressions of the pen and pencil after putting them to some use]The first thing to note is that the set of three comes out to less than the price of two of the included items, or a bit over $13 per pen/pencil. But how is the quality?The fountain pen is the jewel of the set. It comes with a Japanese fine point nib, which is notably finer than a European fine nib. I filled it with Lamy black ink (the extreme cold as I write this prevents me from ordering my preferred ink, lest it freeze) and the result is beautiful. The strokes are very thin, but crisp, even, and intense without any feathering, even on mediocre paper. The writing is smooth, but with good feedback. The pen is a bit on the light side, but still reasonably substantive. The matte finish of the body is elegant, but the nib holder looks a bit like cheap plastic. The nib itself looks well crafted, but not ornate. All in all, it's an excellent every day fountain pen that would be well worth it at full price and a steal when bundled in this set. I also own its medium nib sibling and it's also a fine pen well worth having. By the way, it comes with a squeeze converter installed and a generous sized cartridge on the side.I wasn't initially impressed with the ballpoint pen, but after using it for a few days and comparing it to other ballpoint pens, I've come to re-evaluate its quality. Once it's broken in and the ink is well primed, it writes very smoothly and clearly with crisp, steady lines. It's billed as a medium point (1mm), but it writes like a much smaller point, which I like. You twist it to open and close it and the mechanism is silky smooth. Its heft is similar to that of the fountain pen. I bought the gel roller separately and I like it better than the ballpoint, both in terms of look and how well it writes and feels, but the ballpoint is still very nice and it's useful to have in cases where the gel roller or fountain pens are inappropriate.The pencil is pretty much a regular mechanical pencil packaged to match the pens in the set (which was my reason for getting it). The pencil itself is solid, but the "cap" is pressure fitted over the pencil mechanism. It seemed wobbly, at first, until I noticed that you have to twist it in place to get a tighter fit. The pencil is slightly lighter than the pens, but not enough to make it feel cheap. It wouldn't be my first choice for a mechanical pencil (I swear by the Uni Mechanical Pencil Kurutoga Roulette), but it completes the set nicely.If you buy these individually, each pen/pencil would come in a black tin case with a transparent plastic window. The set comes with a single box for the three, with a leatherette exterior and a cheap faux suede over molded plastic base to hold the pens. Most people won't be buying this for the box, but if it's for a present, the box is ordinary.In summary, the fountain and ballpoint pens are great and the pencil is good, but not spectacular. If you buy this mainly for the fountain pen, you get the ballpoint pen and the pencil for less than the price of either of them sold separately. I suggest completing the set with the gel roller and the medium nib fountain pen. I'm glad I did.

The nib of the fountain pen is fine and a bit scratchy but I suspect after a bit of use it will smooth out.Smooth rollerball pen but not too crazy about the refill, it leaves a few smudges.All in all a classy starter set that would make a great Christmas gift.I understand that one can actually replace the nib if so desired.
