Yes this is the new one. The old version was out of print, and that's why it's so expensive and has so many reviews. Great game!

Q: Does this play as well with 2 as 3 or 4? Or is 3/4 better? Also does it require a large playing area?

It plays fine with 2 players. With 2 players the governor takes a turn, then the second player takes a turn, then the governor goes again, then the governor switches.It requires a moderate amount of space. Meaning the central play area uses the space of 7 standard cards (however you can get them to fit), and each player may have up to 12 cards played out in front of them. Q: If you had to choose between the card game and the digital version, which one would you pick? Why?

Depends on if you have friends/family to play. If so I would recommend the physical version. If you can't get people together, then there is the digital version. I have played both. I love playing with "live" friends/family rather than online. I have experienced connectivity issues with the iPad version. It was probably the public Wifi I was on. Hope that help.s

Q: Would this be a good game to build a non-gamer up to playing Puerto Rico?

Yes. I think so. You will need a few plays with them to "Grok" the full concept of this game but this is certainly a good path to Puerto Rico as they both share (similar) role selection and production/consumption. Don't feel bad if they like this better though. As a hobby board gamer, I do like PR more but I can appreciate the streamlined play in this card game. There is also a PC game version of Puerto Rico, which is Super cheap on Amazon www.amazon.com/Puerto-Rico-PC-game/dp/B000EHK9DWand I have it(Win7 64bit), it is really good. San Juan is also an Android App(Paid version or Condado is the free version, which I like).If you want them to like Race for the Galaxy, then I think Roll for the Galaxy is a great gateway for that one. There is also a free PC game(search for "Race for the Galaxy AI") to help teach/learn Race for the Galaxy, which is the most rewarding of all of them but has the steepest learning curve.Happy gaming and get everyone you can to drink this wonderful cool-aid.. lol
