Q: How thick is the twine?

Not thick enough to be measured. But thick enough for making bouquet garni for soups etc, or for any other kitchen / cooking purposes when the string has to come into contact with food.

Q: How many ply is it, and what is the diameter (1mm,2mm, 3mm,etc.)?

Diameter is not stated on the package. It is a kitchen twine / string to tie up herbs, meat etc. Safe to throw in soups, stocks, roasting etc.

Q: is the string compostable?

Natural fibers are compostable and should break down in a home compost bin.

Q: What's in the box? is there a ball of twine that will fit inside a 3 in diameter twine dispenser?

The box has a ball of twine ( safe for cooking). The box is a dispenser. There is a corner through which the twine can be pulled out to be cut. It doesn't come with a cutter. It is a simple box. I think the twine should fit in a 3 inch diameter but I am not 100% sure. I didn't measure it when it arrived. Now it is partially used. I am using the box it came with as a dispenser.
