It works!
Good size, until you put on the float jacket. Appears well built and solid. Battery life is good. You NEED to read the manual to get the best out of it.

Amazing battery life
It's interesting that SH's smallest radio has the largest battery capacity but that's the case here. It'll last at least 24 hours, sometimes as much as 36, on standby (on and squelched), none of my other radios will make it nearly that long. The user interface is a bit clunky - not as intuitive as my SH 870, but with some practice it works fine. It doesn't float, but if you care about that you can add the external life jacket - but that makes it as bulky as any other radio so sort of defeats the purpose. Has all the features you're likely to care about (triple watch, etc.) and it's a really sweet package. If you're looking for something you can tuck into a relatively small PFD pocket this is it. Just be sure to attach with a lanyard because if it goes over the side it's going to sink.

Very good range on this little thing.
Only had the HX40 for a few days. Will take me a bit to figure out all the features. A friend and fellow kayaker purchased the same radio and we we're able to test them out today. For kayak to kayak comms range will be more than sufficient. At least a few miles. Audio is load and clear, no problem hearing every word. Doubt if I will use the FM too often. WX covers the specific coastal waters we fish and will be extremely valuable. I also purchased the external mic/speaker which has proven to be defective. Speaker works but mic does not on either of our radios.. all in all, I think this thing will do the job and I'm extremely pleased with my purchase.

GREAT for kite surfing
i paired it with a simple harness like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Chest-Holster-Wisfun-Harness-Tactical/dp/B07ZNY27HL/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=radio+harness&qid=1577493075&sr=8-25. unobtrusive, wear it all the time now.
