There is no substitution. Dixon Ticonderoga black is the pinnacle of wooden pencil technology. Sharpens crisply. Writes beautifully. Black eraser is the best I've ever used. I use a pencil for my job and I won't have any other than this one.

When a pencil is sharpened and the lead is not well centered, the wood goes all the way to the top of the point on one side and down quite a way on the other side, and of course it is tough to write with a wooden point.I had hoped that when buying the "world's best pencils," that would not be a problem, but it is on enough of them to be an irritation. In the accompanying picture, you can see that while one pencil sharpened okay, the other has a "wooden point".I don't think that I can blame the electric pencil sharpener that I bought at the same time. It has several holes so that a pencil can be used with the correct opening, but trying different holes didn't fix the problem.The pencils without this problem are great and I like the erasers.

They work as a pencil should. I got them because they were black and I like the design of them.

I’m a writer who mostly works digitally, of course, but when I can use a pencil, this is one of my favorites. I like the sleek black boldness and the feel of solid wood. The eraser is pretty darn good, too.

I was extremely happy to find theses for the classroom and on sale. The students loves them.
