A well researched but un-empathic and un-sympsthic view
This is a good read and well researched. I'm a Christian and found myself nodding in agreement in many parts of it. However the author lacks empathy with the faith and those who practice it. The book is like a biography that describes it's subject well but never gives a convincing insight into her motivation. Instead we are given a rather simplistic materialistic view of a male dominated battle for power. If only they had just been more reasonable, more open, and listened to the women! That's not to say that the church hasn't been all the things it is criticised for, but it has had, and does have other motivations than greed and mysogeny. Central to the faith is that the purpose of life is to worship God, especially to worship God as a community. From this flows key issues. Where does Jesus fit into the worship of God? If we worship together as a community, we have agree something together as a community and that is difficult. It's difficult but also critically important. As we worship, so believe, so we live. We need to live rightly because this world is passing and our eternal salvation is at stake. These are some of the motivations that drive the Christian story.!
