The most powerful rim brakes
tl;dr The most powerful rim brakes, especially good for tandems. The details: For stopping power these are the best brakes you can get, better than a 200mm disc (which I have used). I’ve used these Magura brakes on two different tandems which were ridden in the mountains of Washington and Oregon. These were loaded tandems with two 200+ lb riders, and these brakes were powerful enough to control our decent down some very technical downhills. (We did have to stop half way down to let the rims cool.) I’ve ridden tandems with V-brakes (yuck) and cantilevers, and these Magura brakes are far better. These brakes work so well because of the large brake pads and the high pressure that can be applied to the rim. The large pads are easy to replace, they just snap in, and they are inexpensive. The quick release mechanism works well: flip the lever and one side slips right off so you can remove the wheel. When you reattach the piston with the quick release, it is exactly aligned.Magura sells three different versions of these rim brakes: HS11, HS22, and HS33. They are just about identical except for the levers. One thing the HS33 model does have (and the HS11 & HS22 do not have) is a brake booster which is sometimes called a brake stiffener. The booster mounts on the outside of the brakes and keeps the pistons from twisting when the brakes are applied. This improves the brake feel and control because without it the brakes tend to grab. You can buy the brake booster separately and use it on all models, but the booster is kinda hard to find in the States so it might be worthwhile to buy the HS33 model.Buy the “Easy Mount” version of these brakes; they are far easier to adjust. The older standard mounting version of these brakes are a PITA to adjust, especially after the first time the brakes are installed.Like all hydraulic brakes, these are more difficult to set up than cable operated brakes. You will probably have to cut the hydraulic line to get it the right length, which means you’ll have to attach new line fittings and bleed the brakes. Bleeding tip: bleed the brakes off the bike so that you can get the brake lines aligned from low to high so that you are not trying to force the air bubbles downhill. If you leave the brakes on the bike you will be trying to force the air bubbles down a portion of the line that connects the two pistons. It’s no problem to attach the brakes after you bleed them. Another bleeding tip: snap the lever. Doing that seems to shake loose more air bubbles.
