I’ve had intense anxiety (social and general) for as long as I can remember. Years ago I turned to alcohol to help—a couple of drinks when I felt anxious, or before a social situation calmed everything down, and I felt as though I could manage. But it quickly spiraled out of control to the point where I wasn’t drinking and getting drunk, but instead “dosing” throughout entire days and evenings. The moment I’d try to stop the world would come crashing down and it became a choice between feeling “normal” by drinking something, or dealing with nonstop racing heart, shortness of breath and severe depression. Well the latter was absolutely horrible to live with, so I kept choosing the former. I was hiding liquor bottles in the house so I could pop back to a room and take a nip the moment I would start to feel overwhelmed. Obviously this wasn’t sustainable. My epiphany occurred when my senior dog had a seizure, and to cope, I begged my partner to go and pick up a pint of alcohol, just to get through the worry and fear (she’s okay now). I realized SOMETHING had to change.I read and did research and decided to try L-theanine. This brand was the first brand I tried. I began with 2, and then upped the dose each day until I found the perfect “sweet spot” for me at 1200mg*. That seems like a lot, but my brain had been depleted of natural anxiety defense for years. The day I took at the amount for the first time changed the entire course of my future. For once I was able to breathe, to think clearly, to feel calm and normal without a drop of alcohol. The effect lasted nearly 12 hours, and that night I slept like a baby.I tried it the next day, when that familiar anxiety and urge to drink crept up... and it worked again. Within the hour, my heart began to beat normally, and I was calm and content, and once again drifted off to sleep that night genuinely looking forward to waking up (a rare thing when you drink every night).So far I’ve been sober for three weeks, and I feel amazing. There are no sedation, stimulating or uncomfortable side effects, it kicks in within 30-60 minutes (depending on whether you’ve eaten), and one dose lasts me 12+ hours. I have zero urge to drink, I sleep great, my mood is amazing, and my typical ADHD brain is clear and focused! It’s my belief that when my brain finds equilibrium and begins to produce its own dopamine again (which I’ve read takes about 6 months for alcoholics and problem drinkers) that I’ll only need the L-theanine on difficult or stressful days. For someone who spent every waking moment suffering the pain of severe anxiety, I could really cry from joy for this mental, physical and emotional reprieve. For once I’m truly excited about the future.*1200mg is a high dose, and over the recommendations based on studies looking at changes in alpha waves (200-400mg). I am not a doctor or health practitioner, nor am I suggesting people follow my dosage right out of the gate. If you’ve never had substance abuse issues, you likely will not need such a high dose. Research and consult your doctor before adding any supplement, especially if you intend to take more than the recommended amount. I began with two (the highest recommended dose) and did not increase that dose until 24 hours later. I stopped at 1200mg because that was the dose that gave me the relief and results I was looking for; I do not intend to exceed that amount for myself in the future.Edit to Update: it’s over a year later, and I no longer drink, nor do I need to take Theanine (even in social situations!). My brain is clear, I’m genuinely happy, and so so glad I discovered this. Quitting drinking can be hard, but this absolutely saved my sanity and my life. I'm a fifty year old health care provider who will always remain skeptical of any nutritional supplement making bold, 'life-changing', or disease modifying claims or statements . I like to place my faith in conventional medicine, and prefer to see evidence of successful scientific studies before I feel comfortable recommending any product to a patient, friend, or family member. I purchased this Suntheanine Supplement on Amazon as an experiment a few weeks ago, and chose it mainly because of the overwhelming tide of other positive reviews. Over the past few months, I have been seeking a safe and 'natural' nutritional supplement to help me with some anger management and 'irritability' issues I sometimes have in my workplace environment. Patience with difficult people has never been one of my strengths, and my daily irritability is made all the worse by my caffeine consumption. To make a lengthy story shorter, I take a 200mg Suntheanine capsule one hour before work and--astonishingly--I am alert, focused, and relaxed throughout the course of my eight hour work day! I was stunned and pleasantly surprised that I had finally found a supplement that did exactly what it claimed---and more. I was elated and recommended the product to a fellow 'highly strung' colleague of mine who, after using Suntheanine for several days, informed me the product made him feel 'happy' and relaxed for the first time in a long time. It was important for me to have another health care professional confirm what I suspected and have the same-- or at least a similar--positive response to the same product. I had to rule out the role 'positive thinking' played in this experiment of mine. I have restricted my caffeine consumption a bit, but the oddest sensation I've noticed is that even after consuming copious amounts of coffee or caffeinated soda, I am still calm, alert, focused, and relaxed. I have read that theanine stimulates the production of nitric oxide in endothelial cells. This would cause blood vessels--particularly those in the heart--to dilate or relax. This action is important because many coffee, tea, and soda drinkers have related that theanine seems to work WITH caffeine to help promote concentration on mental tasks, inducing a state of alert calmness WITHOUT the unpleasant effects of caffeine overstimulation like; anxiety, irritability, repetitive behaviors,etc. Alpha brain wave activity increases and Beta brain wave activity decreases, but this is probably more than any of us needs to know about this supplements in vivo activity. Theanine is also purportedly effective in preventing certain forms of cancer, and may have some application in the future vs Alzheimer's disease. More studies need to be performed, but this is a supplement that obviously has multiple health benefits. It is for these and so many other reasons that I highly recommend this supplement for those seeking a unique product capable of inducing mental clarity and relaxation without inducing drowsiness. I am the same person I always was before Suntheanine, but these days I find that I am much more relaxed throughout the course of my hectic days at work. 5 stars for this life-changing supplement!

Has a calming effect for me, more expensive than some other brands.

This is the best L Theanine I have ever purchased. The product is clean. I’m starting to look at little additives in supplements and I was so happy with finding this product. I must say that I have trouble sleeping for years and I am now trying one of these capsules and two magnesium glycinate 150 mg each. I’m sleeping pretty well I would highly recommend them. Also I use the same product for my vitamin D.

I've been using this periodically over the past several weeks to help with my stress and sleep and I quite enjoy it. If I pair it with my coffee in the morning it gives me this clean 'buzz' of energy and kind of smooths out the jitters that my coffee gives me. When I take it at night, I pair it with magnesium and pharmaGABA and I sleep solidly through the night. I definitely recommend it! I will be getting this again.
