Q: How are the fittings protected in an attic space, in terms of heat protection for loft insulation?

I purchased fire proof housings for mine installed under the loft insulation. They are like a bell shape, fire rated and sit over the top of the lights, providing the required air gap around the fitting. I fixed them in place to stop them moving. It is not enough that these are fire rated. You do not want to cover these directly with insulation as they still need to give off heat. The fire rating is to slow down the spread of fire if a fire were to break out in the room. It is not too stop them overheating because they are covered with insulation. If you read the instructions it tells you what the minimum distances are for spacing the light away from objects for ventilation and adequate heat dissipation, that includes insulation. Also somebody mentioned using them outside, it does not say anywhere on the instructions that these are suitable for outside use and it does not give an IP rating, which is required for any electrical equipment installed outside.

Q: Can you fit led bulbs in these lights

Yes you can but make sure you select ones of the right length and width to neatly fit within the light fitting.I use 5W GU 10`s from Deal Extreme which provide a cool white ( 6,500 K ) light of 500 lumens (Item/SKU:-226823 ) for little more than $9 apiece.

Q: How long should bulbs last? General use!

In theory, a long time. In our practice: not very long. We have had these for less than 12 months and already replaced 6 out of 8 LED bulbs. Even worse, only last week one of them burned through (the cover was scorched and popped off due to the heat) and almost started a fire in our ceiling. We're replacing the lot as I write this with better ones from a different brand.
