Hello, it starts the pendulum if it stops for some reason. Most likely to happen when you change the battery or move it.

Q: This clock is supposed to play stairway to heaven, i can’t seem to get it to work. i just put in new batteries.

Q: Is this enclosed by glass or is it open? Have cats & I don't want them playing w/ the movement. Thanks.

The front and rear of the clock's movements are totally enclosed in a clear shield on both sides. It is not glass , it is a clear plastic..
