SHIMANO Tourney FC-TY501 Crankset

I`ve been using this type of crankset for years. They last forever with proper maintenance. The arms are aluminum, but the rings are steel. Steel rings wear very slowly. My first set lasted me 12,000 miles! I convert old mountain bikes for road riding, but they usually have 42-32-22 rings, and 170mm arms. Not good gearing for the road. These 48-38-28 rings, coupled with an 11-28 rear cassette, provide plenty of high end speed, and low enough gearing to tackle any incline. 175mm arms provide better cadence for road riding too. The only downside is that it`s square taper. You will have to retorque 4 or 5 times, then put some blue Locktite on the treads. The bolts are notorious for working their way loose. Also, use a set of 14mm head bolts instead of the cheap hex bolts provided with bottom brackets these days. One last thing, ditch the chain guard, it`s hideous!

I have a 35 year old 21 speed Giant Yukon mountain bike. I have replace just about every component on this bike except the shifters. Now I have replaced the crank. Perfect fit and it does come with both arms. All I had to do was adjust the derailers a little bit and it works fine.
