1 and 1/2 inches is the frame, inside it's about an inch deep.

Q: Will this be large enough for an NFL jersey?

I have used these for several NFL Jerseys, authentic and replica.If displaying the front of the jersey, you can fit the collar and number in the viewing area. If displaying the back you can fit the name plate and number in the viewing area. In both cases the lower part of the jersey and the sleeves need to be tucked back. Depending on the thickness of the jersey you may need to find a different solution for the insert. With thinner jersey material I was able to use the frame as-is. For thicker jerseys I used a piece of foamcore to pin the jersey to. The foamcore is thinner than the linen-and-foam insert that comes with the frame.

Q: how deep is this shadow box.

Mine is closed up now but it is ~ 5/8” to 3/4” inside depth. It easily holds my military medals.
