Hopefully Good Insurance
This is a great idea, data recovery insurance. I will buy it with every new drive that I purchase, and I will replace all critical drives every two years. HOWEVER, the proof of it's value cannot be determined until I have to used the Data Recovery Service. Like any insurance, I hope I never have to use it, but if I do have to use it, I hope it goes well.If I use the service, I will update this reviews.

A Reasonable Price for Good Data Recovery "Insurance"
I bought this to go with a 5TB hard drive. This is like an insurance policy . . . how can you rate it if you never get to use it?I had to trust that the company is and will remain viable and reliable for the duration of this 3-year data recovery plan, and, like insurance, hope I never have occasion to use it.The reason I opted to purchase this plan is that the price seemed reasonable for this level of "insurance."I have been working with computers since 1981, and with hard drives since 1985, and understand the level of risk of a hard drive failure: small but not zero. With a hard drive of this capacity - 5TB in this case - it only made sense to purchase this insurance.

Insurance, always needed
To me, having insurance/warranty coverage on certain electrical devices is a must.

Good for expensive drives with shorter warranties
I never received an email prompting me to register just one that confirmed the purpose. The registration message was "hidden" in my Amazon private messages from third party vendors. I do wonder if they're hoping people forget to register endering the plan useless?Considering you can add this to drives that only have a 1 or 2 year warranty it's not a bad deal as you should at least get a new drive if yours fails even if they don't recover your data. Adding this to a 3+ year warranty drive is more debatable as, at this price, they're not going to spend much time trying to recover your data especially if your drive suffers a mechanical failure which is often the case. Reading through lots of reviews I couldn't find anyone who actually had their data recovered with this service. Also, just to be clear, this service is through Seagate but Seagate will service non-Seagate drives (such as Western Digital) if you buy the right plan. The online registration is fairly straight forward but their list of drives is very out of date so you'll likely have to choose 'other' instead. In summary this makes the most sense for relatively expensive large capacity drives with only a 1 or 2 year warranty. 6TB and larger external drives, for example, typically have short warranties and are notorious for a high failure rate so they're a good candidate.

They profit on your peace of mind
Bought w/ an external storage drive. Actually locked myself out after not going in for a few months so imagine how relieved I was when I found the email for this service was still in the 3yr period mere days-how lucky I felt & called only to have it pointed out that no, my purchase had expired. The coverage began date purchased on Amazon. Not the date the item was received-of course not the most reasonable start date, no, not even the date the email was sent (which fyi was days after the ordered was made) but the very day I ordered. So my device was covered before it ever made it into a shipping box & even before money was transferred. Family photos, client documents, tax docs. Unbelievable! This should be a one-time purchase item w/o an expiration date or just a simple fee when it's needed. Too much scamming people out of hard earned money these days. I won't make this mistake again, I'll just practice my passcode frequently so I dont forget the correct process again.
