You HOLD IT OVER your trash can or bin AND catch the shaving that way... It's 'old school' - ‘classic’ pencil sharpener, okay.However in return, for this/that minor inconvenience, you are going to find, you’ll get one of the cleanest - smoothest - sharpened wood-shafted pencils, in your writing/art/craft/pencil box you own.The blade is ‘razor sharp’ German manufactured steel [no Chinese stuff here] - AND you’ll find you can sharpen 100's and 100's of pencils, before having to even think of replacing the blade [and ‘yes’, replacement blades are out there for these]. I’ve acouple different styled M+R sharpeners - One’s pushing 30 yrs old and it still sharpens like the day I got it [go figure].The Brass body on this sharpener has nice ‘weight’ to it; making it easy to hold and balance in your hands; it’s simple comfortable - And I’ve large-slender hands [with arthritis, too], and I’ve never had any ‘issues’ sharpening standard size and over-sized pencils, with an M+R sharpener.Their quality and detail with these is excellent...craftsmanship superb...materials excellent and they’ll last more then ‘your’ lifetime, under normal usage.My primary reason for this purchase, was I wanted a ‘sharpen’ on my pencils [use colored pencils for artwork], with more of a ‘medium-fine’ point - Not a ‘needle’, liked by many in the field. AND this style performs exceptionally well on producing that type of a lead point. I’ve never had an ‘issue’ on achieving any desired point, with an M+R sharpener; even with a ‘cheapy’ produced pencil, one can get results...As to ‘child-safe’... My 22 yr old Grand-daughter, started using an M+R sharpener before five - She still has ALL her fingers. My soon to be nine yr old Grand-son, has been using an M+R sharpener since before five and has yet, to incur an injury... Between four children and 8+ grandkids, there’s never been an ‘issue’ with a pencil sharpener about here.For around 10 bucks, I’ve no complaint with M+R and with this latest purchase. You could spend less and buy a cheaper sharpener... It’s what you want and/or need, is my thought. However, if you want a pencil sharpener, that’s going to ‘point’ your pencil and do an excellent job at it, then this you might seriously consider one of these.As I always say - ‘It’s your money...’-EDB

Nice product, looks good. Appropriate for most sharpening but not for the very, very sharp points I need. I did keep it because it does work well for everyday use. Has a good solid feel - made from metal, not cheap plastic. Blades appear to be well made. It is nice to have two blades, and screws are easily accessible for future replacements.

This is an attractive, quality product. It cuts pencil wood well and centers the pencil nicely. I like that it has two blades that are replaceable. Not typical plastic garbage that breaks in a week. If you like quality, non-disposable products and a well sharpened pencil this is your product. This is very nearly an ideally designed product that should last multiple lifetimes.

Pros- easy to use, quick to use, built to last, small and practical to take with you anywhere, easily leaves a sharp tip to a pencil. ✏️Negatives- the negative is a positive for me but the pencils can sometimes be so sharp, it can be a bit hazardous if reaching for a pencil in a bag pocket and accidentally touching the tip. The only other thing is there is no waste container for the sharpened pencil parts to fall into, so have a trash handy or do over a piece of paper .

Just as sturdy as my ancient sharpener from the same company. Unfortunately, the quality control on the new one is a bit substandard. For example, the was a poorly machined edge on the small hole side that was quite sharp and required a bit of Dremel work to round it off.

Never thought that I would write a review for a pencil sharpener, but this metal sharpener is not only so much stronger and solid than all these crappy plastic sharpeners, but it is great in the hand and it sharpens so quick, precicely and effortless that I am really impressed. I believe this sharpener will do it for the rest of my life...

I have used a lot of manual hand held pencil sharpeners (being the pencil nerd that I am) This one is the BEST I have ever used. I love this sharpener, it gives me the perfect point every time. I like that I can use the wide side for a shorter point and the thin hole for a longer point. Prior to purchasing this sharpener I used the other bullet style sharpener by the same maker (which became my favorite until I got this one which is even better. This sharpener works better on my Blackwing pencils than does the blackwing sharpener I have. I highly recommend this pencil sharpener. (And it even has a cool name)
