The "Army Tactical Scarf Military Shemagh Patrol Keffiyeh Combat Shermag White Black" is also available in other colourways and designs.Originally worn by the North African desert tribes as a means to protect their mouths and noses from blown sand during desert storms, they are now primarily seen as a fashion accessory. However, during the Coronavirus outbreak and with a government recommendation to wear a face covering such as a scarf when using public transport or within enclosed spaces e.g. when food shopping when total 'social distancing' is either sometimes impractical or unrealistic it can also serve another purpose.Made solely of close-weave cotton, a degree of droplet protection from others' coughs and sneezes will be offered with frequent washing advised and a sensible precaution. However, it may be advisable to have three in order that each is washed thoroughly at least each day or after any extended period of wear and then dried before next use e.g. one worn, one to be washed and a third drying or dry ready for next use.The shemagh is essentially square and about 100 cm a side. That is sufficiently large to wear in various ways - around the neck as a scarf or cravat, around the face as a mask or around the face and over the head (Bedouin-style) are the most common. Initially, one was purchased to assess practicality and usability; others may soon follow.

I bought this scarf for a trip to the Moroccan desert and thought it would be just the job. However, even before I arrived in country the scarf had started to fall apart, with the all the long tassels falling off leaving open fraying seams. When we got to the desert we experienced high winds so there was plenty of airborne sand, but even after wrapping it over my head my ears and face were still covered in a layer of sand at the end of the day. Our guide told us that these scarves are no use in the desert and he advised using a 3m long scarf made from fine weave cotton called a shesh.

Is great but could do with being a touch thicker. But other than than it is spot on!!!
