ALTRAMen's Mont Blanc Trail Running Shoe

After Two Rounds of Try-Ons, Still My Fav Altras
After two years, these remain my favorite style of ALTRAs and I'm already on my second pair. The width is perfect for me and I love how they hug your feet without feeling oppressively tight. Typically, with a slighter wider foot, you'll often end up with a little more toe space than necessary, but the Mont Blancs are as perfect a fit as I've found. I'm not a runner but do spend a good deal of time on my feet and the MBs close sizing, light weight, and good cushion always make me feel a step faster. As other users have mentioned, the Vibram soles do tend to be a squeaky on smooth surfaces; but they are also significantly more durable than ALTRA's MaxTrac outsoles, which I practically wore through on my Lone Peaks. I'll gladly deal with a little gym sound to keep my favourite sneaks intact a bit longer. I could also stand a few more (less electric) colorways in this line. But the one absolute annoyance are the bloody round laces, which will come untied about 8x a day unless you double knot — itself a minor difficultly, as they don't have much extra length. The small lace loops also make replacing them with flat or oval laces difficult. As this is my second pair, I fitted them out-of-the-box with a pair of tieless elastic laces and they were an absolutely dynamo addition. Somehow made the shoes even more comfortable than before. Liked them so much, I even put a pair on my old ones.

Best ALTRA shoe in years
The upper fits me like a glove, there are no unneccessary stiff overlays in the toebox which prevents me from getting blisters on long runs. The midsole has just the right density and thickness and feels super comfortable. The vibram outsole is really sticky and the lugs are the perfect depth not to cause pressure in my forefoot. The heel material sticks to my foot like glue and I'm not sliding around at all when I have the tension of the laces just right. They are nimble and flexible on uneven ground, roots and rocks and I feel super secure going up and down hills. It would be nice if the tongue was a little longer and more padded, the heel could also use padding all the way up, but those are minor concerns. I love these shoes. In my opinion the best shoes Altra ever made.

Want to like it more…
I like the shoe but the heel is not firm enough for my liking. It’s a little hard to describe but there is padding to try and secure it to the heel of your foot. It just feels weird. Maybe I just need to get used to it. Otherwise I like the shoe. It’s fairly comfortable and good cushion but not squishy. Very grippy outer sole.

Light and fast but funnel for rocks
Overall, I really like this shoe. It is light and has lots of cushion. It feels about a half size larger than other Altra models I have used. In trail running, I'm getting more little pebbles in my shoe than normal. I have never used gaiters, but would definitely want them with this shoe on a longer run. The trail grip is good. The color is bold--sure to distract your competition.Update: After a little more use, I like this shoe a lot less. I'm dropping to 3 stars. The fit around the ankle is just a funnel for little rocks. It might be a great shoe on dirt trails, but on my trails it's not functional without gaiters. On another note, part of the tread started peeling off on the shoe on the same spot on both shoes. I might expect this at the very end of the life-cycle of the shoe, but I think my shoes are still good for a couple of months. Because of the design, the way it peels up is not likely to cause a trip (which is good), but it still makes me nervous for my shoe to be doing weird things as I'm running across rocky terrain. Hopefully a little super glue will get me some more time with these, but they are now my least favorite Altra's.

Worst shoe on market!
Absolutely the worst trail shoe ever made! The shoe flares open at the ankle which cause small rocks to literally poor in, I have to take my shoes off constantly to dump rocks out! The frame of the shoe is wobbly which is great on trails if you want to roll your ankles! Sole is clunky and slow! Altra has become the worst shoe company by far the last few years. I’m not sure if they sold the company to Coca Cola or wal mart but whoever is making these shoes has never tested them or does not run!

Mont Blanc wow
The media could not be loaded. I HAVE THE CORAL WITH OVER 200 miles. They mainly are used for easy trail runs in the 6 miles (10km) to 13 miles (21km) range. These are definitely Durable and have minimal wear and tear. When i read the reviews before i purchased, some comments said they are big (correct) and wear out easily.. WRONG!! i purchased half size smaller. This was perfect. Also, i have slim feet. Love the wide toebox and the lugs greatly appreciated. I regulary run on pavement but only for a mile or two and have not noticed any major wear and tear.I highly recommend these sneakers.... i will repurchaseAltra is my brand for marathons and training..

Squeaky shoes
I really like the style comfort of these shoes. They fit as expected. I have been using them for general wear and hiking . They do very well, gripping on rocks and making me feel secure on the trail. There are two issues that have me very disappointed. The biggest issue is that the shoes squeak constantly. It’s not a quiet squeak. It’s very noisy. It’s hard to be out on the trail trying to enjoy nature when your shoes squeak every time you move. I was walking down the hall and everyone turned to look at me because my shoes were so noisy. The other issue, considerably less important is the very thin tongue that makes it hard to put the shoes on. In order to get the tongue in the proper position, I have to untie and loosen the laces and dig out the tongue. I gave them two stars because of the squeaking noise.
