Yes it is. However, it does function quite well in night vision mode. It has a limited range of about 40 to 50 feet, but in total darkness you would think it was 1st generation night vision. It is pretty amazing for the price, but it is a toy.

It's a toy for pete's sake. It doesn't have real thermal imaging ... thermal imaging devices cost > $20,000.00. It simulates a thermal look by transposing brightness levels to the color scheme of thermal imaging devices.

Q: Could this product be used for night airsoft?

If you are doing airsoft indoors, the answer would be yes. In an outdoor situation, I would have to say no, because ambient light while outdoors limits the range of these goggles. Inside a building, the optics of these inexpensive goggles are amazing.

Q: Is this a monocular or binocular unit?

Binocular viewfinder with monocular output. I don't know if I'm explaining that properly but you look through the unit with both eyes as you would with binoculars yet the images are viewed through one frame. These are excellent goggles, and my son never tires of using them!
