The Book of Camping & Woodcraft: A Guidebook For Those Who Travel In The Wilderness

One of the best antiquated texts on outdoor living.
This is by far one of my favorite reads from the turn of the century. I loan it out or buy new copies to give away all the time. It's a philosophical and practical guide to simple outdoor trips for beginners and those looking for information on the simple principles camping. The book is antiquated and the has references that aren't deemed appropriate to the times for certain ethnic peoples, but not at all condescending.Every facet of camping during the beginning of the 20th century is included. Some of the practices have been discontinued for preservation's sake, but it's a very good guide for teaching the principles of both overnight and expedition camping. Kephart's writing style and vocabulary are excellent and he has a few other, more interesting books on his travels. The best part of the book is his expedition across Michigan with nothing more than a knapsack and a black powder rifle. This book is a great way to get children and young adults interested in the mystic arts of the outdoorsman.

Oldie but goodie
Great read but a little dated but to be expected. Great information and information that you could use even today. Classic.

Buy the paperback only, The perfect outdoorsman guide book
This is in my humble opinion the greatest outdoors book you can buy. This man truly captures what being outdoors is all about. Some of the techniques and gear he speaks of may be outdated but you will find most of this book still applies today and there is nothing wrong with doing it the old way sometimes. If you are looking for an all rounder outdoors bushcrafter book then this is the book for you. It is also enjoyable reading this and seeing how they spoke back in those days. Simpler times for sure but even today we can enjoy the same things he enjoyed out in the bush. Buy this as a gift for an outdoorsman in your life and he will thank you.

Classic Woodcaft
This is a classic woodcraft book, many part are still useful today. This is a complete book, professionally typeset and edited, unlike some other version of this book which are poorly scanned and missing information or illegible

I have been camping, hunting and fishing since old ...
I have been camping, hunting and fishing since old enough to keep both ends of a pole off the ground. My family has been involved in the outdoors forever. I have had many lessons, tricks and tips given me, and have many books on camping and the outdoors. I read a review of Kephart's book and life in Field and Stream, so I bought it. Even after 100 years of advancements in gear and equipment, for just shear knowledge, this is the most complete book I've ever read. Equipment will always change and evolve. The question is, how will you survive without it? This book has the answers, not only for all your questions, but for the ones you haven't thought of yet.

Wow, best camping/bushcraft/woodcraft book-
Get this book, honestly it is one that all the big name "TV star" bushcrafters have read to get them where they are now.I recently purchased it and it has some amazing reminders for me. Absolutely great information and approaches with some minor replacements and varied approaches in medical section the rest still easily applies and works very well.I own several kephart blades as well as morakniv scandi and other trade style hunting knives from the earlier part of 1900s and 1800s that work really well with upgraded modern steelThis book is a compilation of solid information necessary for anyone who does much woodcraft work

Don't buy it if its not an original. The copies are incomplete and very poorly scanned. rip off.
I eagerly awaited this book and had purchased the hard copy so I could pass it down. When I opened the package I saw a beautiful cover but when I opened it up it was a ridiculously bad photo copy of half pages that are 50% unreadable and half of the book is missing. I feel like a complete sucker and wont be buying any more books this way. I would hope someone at Amazon would do QC to catch this type of fraud.

A good primer for the ultralight packer.
Okay, a lot of this advice does not apply today, but neither does much of what is written in the pre-70s backpacking literature. You cannot cut boughs to make your bed any more, at least not in most places, but he makes his point of having a good bed of material between yourself and the cold, hard ground. His advice on fire making is top notch as to size and using a reflector when you can have a fire, not a specialist stove. He gets to the core of staying comfortable in the wild with a minimal amount of stuff. He would collapse with laughter at the loads some take into the woods and rough it, not having much fun in the process. Pay attention to what Kephart says and you can join the ranks of the ultralight packers, especially with the super materials you have at your disposal, lightweight and low in bulk if chosen correctly. You might actually go out and enjoy the outdoor experience instead of coming in after you have "conquered" the wild.Of course, we cannot copy all his methods, but we can apply them to today and learn to enjoy a simpler time in the outdoors, which is one of my chief reasons for being out there.
