For each swing hanger, it says the maximum load is 900kg (1984 lbs). is that working load or minimum breaking load? if wl, what safety factor?

I am not sure on the engineering specs but used them to hang a porch swing and a hammock. The swing often has 2 adults on it with no problems so far.

Can this be screwed into a metal joists?

No, this is wooden screw and only for wood beams

What size pilot hole do I need?

The description of the product says that the screw is 8 mm or 0.31 inches (more than 1/4" and less than 1/3"). I measured the set I ordered and that checks out. So, the pilot hole should be smaller than 1/4 inch (you want to have some wood for the screw to hold on to). References I have read suggest a 7/32" pilot hole is appropriate. Certainly not a 1/2"!

What size pilot hole have folks used to install (in pine/fir)?
