No they are no good for walking either I worked an 8 hour shift with them on and I was in agony

Hi, Yes there is a left and right foot gel sleeve and they are not reversible - the gel pad is permanently fixed in the sleeve and the sleeve is shaped so as to fit each foot. They feel a bit weird when you first put them on, especially if you're not used to something round your big toe, but you soon get used to them as they shape themselves to your foot. I found they gave pretty good impact protection to the ball of foot. You need quite wide and/or deep shoes though, as they do take up quite a bit of space. Hope that helps.

It says the package contains 1 metatarsal gel sleeve and 1 ball of feet cushion - does that mean there isn't 2 of each type for left and right foot?

There's one for each foot both the gel sleeve and 2 feet cushions.
