Do you have to remove the pedal to recharge?

No. Just have the bike near an outlet and put the charging cable on the pedal. I charge mine in the garage without removing the pedal.

Can you change out the batteries? Or once they won’t charge anymore you have to buy a whole new unit ?

The batteries are encapsulated in the protective resin. Once they fail to charge, they are done. I hope it has been a very long period of time with plenty of miles on the bike. R.I.P. Pedal(s)

does this pedal needs to work with other devices? Like do I need to have a smartwatch or cycle computer when I want to know the power data?

Yes you will need something to read your power on. The pedals are what measures power only but they do not display anything. I recommend getting a Garmin bike computer for easy viewing while riding.
