Insight into spiritual survival of slave world of the Atlantic world
This book brought to light some of the answers to questions which I have wondered about in regard to the enslavement by a world of their own people. I knew that politics and power were involved on all fronts, and now some of the why's have been answered. The connection of what I saw as completely diverse religious beliefs between Africa and the Christian world is explained in this book and the depth of African culture and its incredible strength of its religious bonds of community and unity come to light in this text.

Recommended for Undergrads
This book is phenomenal. It traces the deep and important connections that developed between Africa, Brazil, and Portugal during the era of the Atlantic slave trade through the life of one man, Domingos Alvarez. My students in an upper division undergraduate history course really connected with the story Sweet told and the way in which he told it. Highly recommended.

I learned a lot about slavery from this book. ...
I learned a lot about slavery from this book. Well written, however, it seems some of the research was not as objective as it could have been.

Fantastic book for tracing the impact of the Atlantic world ...
Fantastic book for tracing the impact of the Atlantic world through the life of one man. One critique is Sweet's extensive speculation regarding Domingos' inner thoughts or feelings. Overall though, this was a very interesting book and engaging read.

Interesting Narrative, Great Read
Loved this book. Had to read it for a Master's level Atlantic World History course. Was really eye-opening, especially about slavery and African diaspora culture in the Atlantic World.
