Would this work on a mattress on a bed frame without a boxspring?

Yes, it really improved the friction between the mattress and the metal frame so that when my large dog jumps on the bed, it no longer slides way over.

Has anyone used this with a Sleep Number bed?

Yes I use it on my guest room full size sleep number bed. It only helps about 90% still getting some mattress slippage but not as bad without it

Need this for our new, overpriced, custom Monarch sofa- does it need to be as large as the cushion or can it be cut shorter? Tx.

I think it could be some shorter. Mine is used on a metal twin platform bed and the head and foot ends actually hang down between the wires so it doesn't really cover the entire mattress area, but it still works to grip the mattress.
