Q: I have a 3" wide opening. the 2 inch looks too small and the 3 inch looks too big. what size do i get?

These fit into the 3” pvc fitting that about 3 3/8”. Your vent maybe 2 1/2” that was very popular 15 yrs ago. Pvc is measured inside diameter.

Q: Will this snugly fit over the metal 4 in. furnace vent ( e.g. galvanized Quick Fit Duct, 4" , female smooth end)

I’m not sure. I wish I could include a picture. Ours went just inside of pvc piping that is venting something from our basement and the fit was perfect inside the pipe.

I'm not exactly sure but I had a 2" inch pvc pipe and I ordered the 2" screen. Hope that helps. Whatever the pipe is listed as, buy the vent the same size. 4" pipe 4" vent.
